To say that the passing away of the Tathagata is like a fire extinguished when the wood is exhausted is a meaning to be led. To say that the Tathagata has entered the realm of Dharma itself is called the definitive meaning. In short, one should not abide in the Dharma of the Hearer Vehicle. Why? Because the Tathagata taught the Hearer Vehicle as a means of practice in order to liberate individual beings. For example, it is like a householder teaching a small child half of the alphabet. Son of good family, the Hearer Vehicle is like a field that has just been plowed for the first time, and because it has no fruit, one should not abide in it. Therefore, the Hearer Vehicle is called the meaning to be led. One should abide in the Dharma of the Great Vehicle. Why? Because the Tathagata taught the Great Vehicle as a means of practice in order to liberate individual beings. Therefore, it is called the definitive meaning, and one should abide in it. In this way, one should comprehend and understand the four ways of abiding in such a manner. Furthermore, to abide in meaning is to say that meaning is truth. Truth is luminosity. Luminosity is non-regression. Non-regression is the Tathagata. Furthermore, luminosity is wisdom. Truth is eternally abiding. The Tathagata is eternal, which is to abide in the Dharma. Dharma is called eternal, infinite, inconceivable, ungraspable, and unbound, and it is visible. If someone says it is invisible, one should not abide in that person. Therefore, one abides in the Dharma, not in a person. If someone speaks of impermanence with very good words, one should not abide in those words. Therefore, it is said to abide in meaning, not in words. The Sangha that abides in wisdom is eternal, unconditioned, immutable, and does not hold the eight unexamined objects. Therefore, one abides in wisdom, not in consciousness. Some say, "Made by consciousness, experienced by consciousness, there is no harmonious Sangha." Why? Because harmony is nothing. Because there is nothing, how can it be called eternal? Therefore, one does not abide in consciousness. What is abiding in the definitive meaning? The definitive

The term "ོན་" means contentment. Never live by deception, do not adorn behavior, do not be arrogant, do not be attached to gain and fame, and do not be attached to the Dharma spoken by the Tathagata as a means of practice. This is the definitive meaning. Whoever abides in this, that person is said to abide in the ultimate truth; therefore, abide in the definitive meaning. What is it that does not abide in the guiding meaning? The guiding meaning is what is said in the Sutras: all are with suffering, all are impermanent, all are suffering, all are empty, all are without self. Saying this is the guiding meaning. Why is that? Because not understanding these meanings causes many beings to fall into the uninterrupted hell. How is that? Because of attachment and clinging, the meaning is not truly realized. All are with suffering means that Nirvana also has suffering; all are impermanent means that Nirvana is also impermanent. Holding the words of the Tathagata in this way, one should also understand extensively between suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Therefore, do not abide in the Sutras of the guiding meaning. Regarding this, someone might say: Because the Tathagata is compassionate to all beings, he is very skilled in discerning the right time and measure. Because he is skilled in discerning the right time, he speaks of light things as heavy, and heavy things as light. The Tathagata knows and realizes that for whichever attendant a patron offers whatever necessities are desired with faith, the Blessed One does not allow that person who is giving to hold and use male and female servants, gold, silver, jewels, and all kinds of unexamined things such as engaging in trade. For whichever attendant who does not have a patron to provide for their livelihood and encounters famine, when alms cannot be found, in order to properly establish and protect the true Dharma, he allows my attendants to hold and use male and female servants, gold, silver, vehicles, houses, barley and rice, trade, and so on. Although he allows them to hold and use in this way, it is indispensable to have a patron with great faith. Therefore, one should abide in these four dharmas.
