also be able to teach others. If there is a person who knows the profound meaning of what the Thus-gone One thinks and speaks, and also knows that the Thus-gone One is of the nature of permanence and immutability, then that person, just for the sake of gain, says that the Thus-gone One is impermanent, which is impossible. If even that person should be relied upon and dwelt with, what need is there to mention relying upon and dwelling with the four assemblies? Dwelling in the Dharma means dwelling in the Dharma-nature. Not dwelling in a person means not dwelling in a Hearer. Dharma-nature means the Thus-gone One. Hearer means conditioned phenomena. The Thus-gone One is permanent. Conditioned phenomena are impermanent. Son of good family! If there is a person who, because of damaged discipline, or for the sake of gain or fame, says that the Thus-gone One is impermanent, changing, and transforming, then one should not dwell with that person. Son of good family! This is called definitive meaning. What is meant by dwelling in the meaning but not dwelling in the words? Meaning means the actual realization of meaning. The meaning of actual realization means not being timid. Not being timid means being perfect. The meaning of perfection means the Thus-gone One abiding permanently, unchanging, and untransforming. The meaning of the Thus-gone One abiding permanently, unchanging, and untransforming means the Dharma is permanent. The meaning of the Dharma being permanent means the Sangha is permanent. This is called dwelling in the meaning but not dwelling in the words. What are the words in which one does not dwell? For example, the treatises of many non-Buddhists, and the immeasurable sutras spoken by the Blessed One, those who are intensely greedy and insatiable, who live by deception and practice deceit, who feign good conduct, and who rely on householders for gain and fame. Furthermore, there are such words as: 'The Thus-gone One, the Blessed One, has allowed the monks to hold and use such things as male and female slaves, and unexamined objects such as gold, silver, jewels, barley, rice, storehouses, cattle, sheep, woolly elephants, horses, etc., and has allowed them to use them and engage in trade.' It is also said: 'In times of famine, out of compassion for his sons, he allowed the monks to hold surplus provisions, etc.' I with my hand

Having prepared rice porridge as food, it is permissible to eat it without blessing it. Although the Sutras say this, one should not abide by that statement. What is meant by "abiding in wisdom, not abiding in consciousness"? Wisdom is the Tathagata. Any Shravaka who does not abide in the qualities of the Tathagata is called consciousness, and one should not abide in it. If someone knows the Tathagata himself as the Dharmakaya, that is true wisdom, and one should abide in it. If someone knows the body shown by the Tathagata as a means, that it is composed of the five aggregates, twelve ayatanas, and eighteen dhatus, and that it needs food to be nourished, that is consciousness, and one should not abide in it. If someone teaches that way, or if it comes from letters and treatises, one should not abide in it. One should abide in the Sutras of definitive meaning, and not abide in the Sutras of provisional meaning. What does that mean? The Sutras of provisional meaning are like this: When those of the Shravaka vehicle hear the extremely profound meaning of the Bhagavan, they become doubtful and amazed, and do not understand that the profound meaning arises from the essence, the great ocean of wisdom. Just like a small child who does not understand anything and cannot distinguish between right and wrong, that is called provisional meaning. Definitive meaning means that the Bodhisattva's correct wisdom enters unobstructed wisdom as he thinks. Just like a great man who does not lack understanding of anything, that is called definitive meaning. Furthermore, the Shravaka vehicle is called provisional meaning, and the unsurpassed Great Vehicle is called definitive meaning. If someone says that the Tathagata is impermanent, changing and transforming, that is provisional meaning. If someone says that the Tathagata is permanent, unchanging and unmoving, that is definitive meaning. What is understood and realized by the teachings of the Shravakas is provisional meaning, and what is understood and realized by the teachings of the Bodhisattvas is definitive meaning. If someone says that the Tathagata needs food to be nourished, that is provisional meaning. If someone says that the Tathagata is permanent, abiding, unchanging, and unmoving, that is definitive meaning. If someone says that the Tathagata
