does not leak. Bodhisattvas are also like that. Even if their precepts are impaired, the upavasatha, the actions arising from the precepts, and the activities of the sangha will not be impaired. They are not like a leaky canal. Why? If there were no individuals who were completely pure in their precepts, the sangha would decline, and arrogance and laziness would arise again and again. If there were individuals who were completely pure in their precepts, then the precepts of the first upasampada would not be impaired. Son of good family, relaxation with regard to the vehicle is not called relaxation, relaxation with regard to the precepts called relaxation is called relaxation. If bodhisattvas, great beings, do not have arrogance and laziness towards this great vehicle, it is called the precepts themselves. In order to protect the sacred Dharma, they bathe in the water of the great vehicle. Therefore, even if bodhisattvas show that their precepts are impaired, they should not be called relaxed. Then, Bodhisattva Light Protector said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, there are four kinds of individuals in the sangha, like mangoes, it is difficult to distinguish whether they are ripe or not. How can we know whether the precepts are impaired or not impaired? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, it is easy to know through this Mahaparinirvana Sutra. How can we know through the Mahaparinirvana Sutra? For example, farmers plow the fields, sowing rice and weeds. After removing the weeds and other weeds, they examine them with the eyes of flesh, and call them fertile fields. After the grains ripen, they separate the grass and weeds. Similarly, eight kinds of things will defile the sangha. If these things are removed, even if they are examined with the eyes of flesh, they will be known to be completely pure. It is difficult to know with the eyes of flesh when those who have impaired their precepts and those who keep their precepts do not commit offenses. If offenses manifest, it is easy to know, just as it is easy to know and recognize weeds. The sangha is also like that. The eight things that have not been examined should be completely abandoned like poisonous snakes. This is called the completely pure noble sangha, the field of merit, the deva

And people will ripen the fruit of complete purity in a place worthy of offering, but this is not understood by those with eyes of flesh. Son of good family, furthermore, in the grove of Kalaka trees, there are very many Kalaka trees, but only one Chandana tree. The fruits of the Kalaka and Chandana trees are similar, and because they cannot be distinguished, when the fruits ripen, a woman gathers them all. In that grove, the fruits of the Chandana tree are about one-tenth, and the fruits of the Kalaka tree are more than nine-tenths, and that woman, because she does not know, picks them and sells them in the market. Foolish little children, not knowing the truth, buy the fruits of the Kalaka tree and eat them. As soon as they eat them, they die. Wise and intelligent people, hearing that such a thing has happened, ask the woman, "Hey! Where did this fruit come from?" The woman replies, "It came from this direction and place." Everyone laughs at her, saying, "In that place and direction, there are very many Kalaka trees, but only one Chandana tree." Then they leave. Son of good family, the behavior of practicing the eight unexamined things in the Sangha is also similar to this. In the Sangha, there are very many who practice the eight unexamined dharmas, but there is only one who completely protects the precepts and does not practice the eight unexamined dharmas. Like this, even though they know that they hold and practice the unexamined dharmas, they still do things together with them. Not separating is like a single Chandana tree growing in a grove of Kalaka trees. A layperson, seeing that those people practice many non-dharmic things, and there is no offering and respect, but they make offerings to those people, thinking in their heart, first ask them, "Venerable ones, do you practice the eight unexamined things? Is it allowed by the Buddha?" If they say, "It is allowed by the Buddha," then ask, "Is it permissible or not to do the Uposatha, request, petition, and dharmic deeds together with those people?" After the layperson asks this, the Sangha replies, "These eight unexamined things, the Bhagavan, out of compassion for us, has allowed us to hold and practice." The layperson then says, "The boundaries of the monastery..."
