Son of good family, for example, those who are brave and skilled are always surrounded and relied upon by those who are cowardly and weak. That brave man teaches the coward, saying, 'Hold the bow like this, shoot the arrow like this, learn the javelin, and obtain the curved sword and rope like this.' Furthermore, he says, 'Fighting with enemies is like going to the edge of a sword, but do not generate thoughts of fear. Instead, generate thoughts of extreme contempt for the opponent, whether they are gods or humans. Think of yourself as being extremely brave and skilled.' In between, some cowardly and weak people will pretend to be brave, taking up bows, swords, and various weapons, and come to the battlefield shouting loudly. You should not be afraid or frightened of them. If the cowardly person knows that you are not afraid, they will immediately turn away and flee like a dog thief. Son of good family, the Thus-Gone One is also like that. To the Hearers, he says, 'You should not be afraid of the evil one, Mara.' Even if the evil one, Mara, transforms into the form of a Buddha and comes before you, you should subdue the hosts of Mara with extremely steadfast diligence. At that time, Mara will also be overcome with sorrow, displeased, and will depart. Son of good family, just as a brave man does not need to learn from others, so too, diligently practicing the Great Vehicle is like that. Even if one hears various extremely profound Sutras, one's mind will be very joyful and satisfied, and one will not generate fear or dread. Why is that? It is because a person who studies the Great Vehicle has prostrated to, revered, and made offerings to countless hundreds of thousands of Buddhas in the past. Even if countless hundreds of thousands of Mara's retinues harm or torment him, he will never experience fear or dread. Son of good family, it is like this: for example, if a person finds the medicine Agada, he will not be afraid of poisonous snakes and all other poisons. Because the power of that medicine can destroy all poisons. The Sutras of the Great Vehicle are also like that; one will not be afraid of the poison of all Maras, and one can also tame those who do not submit in the future. Son of good family, furthermore, this

Consider the example: When a venomous dragon intends to kill another, some die merely from being looked at, and some die merely from inhaling its breath. Therefore, lions, tigers, leopards, dogs, and all others fear it. When those wild beasts and the like hear its voice or are merely touched by its body, none can escape death. If someone is highly skilled in mantras, they can subdue all venomous dragons, garudas, crazed elephants, lions, tigers, leopards, and the like through the power of mantras, and they can control and ride them. When those wild beasts see someone skilled in mantras, they will tame themselves. Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are also similar to this; they are all terrified when they see wicked demons. Wicked demons have no fear of them and will even perform demonic deeds. Those who study the Mahayana are also similar to this. Thus, the Shravakas fear demons, and when they see those who do not believe in the Mahayana, they first subdue the hosts of demons through skillful means, and after subduing them all, they then teach and explain various aspects of the sacred Dharma beneath them. When the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas see the demons subdued in this way, they initially feel fear and then develop faith and belief in the unsurpassed sacred Dharma of the Mahayana, saying, "From now on, we will not create obstacles or hindrances to this sacred Dharma." Furthermore, sons of good family, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas develop fear and dread of the afflictions. Those who study the Mahayana have no fear or apprehension. Those who diligently practice the Mahayana possess such power. Because of such causes and conditions, what was previously taught and explained was for the sake of subduing demons by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, not for the sake of the Mahayana. This extremely profound Mahayana Nirvana Sutra is wondrous and marvelous, and it cannot be subdued. If someone listens, hears, and then believes and upholds it, or believes that the Tathagata possesses the nature of permanence, then that person is as rare as the Udumbara flower. After my Nirvana, whoever uses the Mahayana
