Having obtained all desires, hatred, and ignorance, completely cutting off all the roots of affliction. Cutting off the roots of affliction is true liberation, and true liberation is the Tathagata. Furthermore, liberation is cutting off all conditioned dharmas, generating all unconditioned dharmas, and severing all continuities, like this: merely cutting off self and non-self, as well as neither self nor non-self, and attachment and clinging, but not cutting off the view of self. The view of self is the Buddha-nature. The Buddha-nature is true liberation, and true liberation is the Tathagata. Furthermore, liberation is the emptiness that is not empty. The so-called emptiness of emptiness is nothing at all. Nothing at all is like the liberation of the naked ascetics and so on. Because the naked ascetics do not have true liberation, it is called the emptiness of emptiness. True liberation is not like that, so it is the emptiness that is not empty. The emptiness that is not empty is true liberation. True liberation is the Tathagata. Furthermore, liberation is not empty. For example, a container for water, butter, yogurt, wine, and honey. Even if there is no water, butter, yogurt, wine, and honey, it is still called a container for water and so on. For that container, it cannot be said to be empty or not empty. If it is said to be empty, it cannot be said to be form, smell, taste, or touch. If it is said to be not empty, then there is no water or anything else. Liberation is also similar to that, it cannot be said to be form, or not form, or empty, or not empty. If it is said to be empty, it cannot be said to be permanent, blissful, self, or pure. If it is said to be not empty, then who experiences permanence, bliss, self, and purity? Therefore, it cannot be said to be empty or not empty. For example, the twenty-five existences, as well as all afflictions, as well as all sufferings, as well as all signs, as well as all conditioned actions.

Because there is nothing, it is like there is no milk porridge in a pottery, it is called emptiness. Non-emptiness is called true form, which is constant, happy, self, and pure, unmoving and unshakable, for example, pottery has form, smell, taste, and touch, so it is called non-empty. Therefore, liberation is like that pottery. That pottery will break when it encounters conditions, but liberation is not like that, it is indestructible. Indestructible is true liberation. True liberation is the Tathagata. Furthermore, liberation is free from desire. For example, sentient beings with a mind of desire also crave the status of Indra, Brahma, and the Wheel-Turning King. Liberation is not like that, if one attains unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, there is no desire, no doubt. No desire, no doubt, is true liberation. True liberation is the Tathagata. If it is said that liberation has desire and doubt, that is impossible. Furthermore, liberation is the cutting off of desire for existence, all characteristics, all bonds, all defilements, all cycles of rebirth, all causes and conditions, and all ripened fruits. Therefore, liberation is the Tathagata. The Tathagata is Nirvana. All sentient beings, because they fear the suffering of samsara, rely on the Three Jewels for refuge. For example, a mountain deer is afraid of hunters, and if it escapes obstacles, it will jump once, that is one refuge. Jumping three times like this is a metaphor for taking refuge three times. Jumping three times will bring happiness. Ordinary people are also like this, because they are afraid of the hunters of the four maras, so they rely on the Three Jewels for refuge. Turning to the Three Jewels will bring happiness. What brings happiness is true liberation, and true liberation is the Tathagata. The Tathagata is Nirvana.
