Since all sentient beings can see and know, why is it said that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, has a hidden meaning in what he says? The Bhagavan said to Light Protector: Very good, very good! Son of good family, just as you have said, the Tathagata does not have a hidden meaning in what he says that requires special consideration. Why is that? For example, the full moon in autumn is very clear in the sky above, without any obscuration, so everyone can see it. The Tathagata's teachings are also like that, very clear and pure, but because ignorant ordinary people do not understand, it is said that there is a hidden meaning that requires special consideration. Wise and intelligent people understand it, so it is not called a secret. Son of good family, for example, a person accumulates a lot of gold and silver, going to countless amounts, but is stingy and does not give to the poor, so it is called a secret treasure because of stinginess. The Tathagata is not like that, having accumulated immeasurable precious Dharma for countless kalpas, he constantly gives to all sentient beings without stinginess, so why is it said that the Tathagata has a hidden meaning in what he says? Son of good family, for example, a person who is physically incomplete, missing one eye, or one hand, or one foot, is ashamed and does not let others see him, so it is called a secret. The Tathagata is not like that, all the sacred Dharma is perfectly complete and without deficiency, allowing everyone to see it, so why is it said that the Tathagata has a hidden meaning in what he says? Son of good family, for example, a poor person who has accumulated a lot of debt is afraid of being chased by creditors and does not let people see him, so it is called a secret. The Tathagata is not like that, he is not attached to worldly dharmas for all sentient beings, nor does he hide sentient beings' attachment to transcendental dharmas. Why is that? Because he regards all sentient beings as if they were his only child, and reveals and teaches the unsurpassed Dharma. Son of good family, for example, a wealthy householder

If someone has only one son and loves him very much, he shows him all the treasures he possesses. The Tathagata is also like this, regarding all sentient beings as if they were his only child. Son of good family, for example, people in the world cover their male and female organs with clothes because they are unsightly, and this is called a secret. The Tathagata is not like that, because he is far removed from the senses and has transcended the realm of the senses, so there is no secret or concealment. Son of good family, for example, Brahmins do not want Kshatriyas and Chandalas to hear all the treatises they speak. Why is that? Because there are faults of error in the treatises. The sacred Dharma of the Tathagata is not like that, because it is good in the beginning, middle, and end, so it cannot be called a secret. Son of good family, for example, if a householder has only one son and loves him very much, so he takes him to a teacher to study, but if he is worried that he will quickly become tired of learning, he takes him home out of love and diligently teaches him day and night, teaching him half of the letters, but not teaching him all the treatises. Why is that? Because he is young and lacks strength, so he does not have the ability to memorize. Son of good family, if that householder teaches half of the letters, will that son then know and understand all the treatises? Answer: No. The Bhagavan said: Is that householder keeping secrets from that son? Answer: No. Bhagavan, why is that? Because the son is young, he is not taught so that he will not become tired of learning, but not because he is stingy and keeping secrets. Why is that? Because having a stingy mind is called keeping secrets, the Tathagata is not like that, and it cannot be said that he has a hidden intention. The Bhagavan said: Very good, very good. Son of good family, just as you said, having a mind of hatred, jealousy, and stinginess is called keeping secrets, but the Tathagata does not have hatred, jealousy, and stinginess, so there are no secrets.

This is not permissible. Son of good family, the so-called householder is like the Thus-Gone One. The so-called only son refers to all sentient beings, and the Thus-Gone One sees all sentient beings as if they were his only son. The so-called disciple is like the attendant of a Hearer. The so-called half-letter is like the nine categories of scriptures. The so-called great treatise is like the very extensive Great Vehicle sutras. Because the Hearers do not have the power of wisdom, the Thus-Gone One teaches the nine categories of scriptures, which are like half-letters, but does not teach the very extensive Great Vehicle sutras, which are like great treatises. Son of good family, if the son of a householder is strong and has the ability to memorize, but does not learn the great treatise, that is called a secret. If a Hearer has the ability to memorize the Great Vehicle treatise, but the Thus-Gone One is stingy and does not teach it, then it can be said that the Thus-Gone One has a hidden intention. The Thus-Gone One is not like that, therefore the Thus-Gone One has no hidden intention. Just as the householder first teaches his son half-letters and then teaches him the great treatise, so too is the Thus-Gone One. He first teaches his attendants the nine categories of scriptures, which are like half-letters, and then teaches them the great treatise. This is to say that the Thus-Gone One is of the nature of the unchanging and permanent Dharma. Son of good family, furthermore, it is like this: for example, in the summer season, a great rain cloud arises and heavy rain falls. Farmers who cultivate the land and sow many seeds will obtain a great harvest. Those who sow few seeds will obtain a small harvest. This is not the fault of the Dragon King, nor is it the Dragon King's secret. The Thus-Gone One is also like that. By raining down the great rain of Dharma, the great Nirvana, those sentient beings who accumulate virtuous results will obtain the sprouts and fruits of wisdom. Those who have no seeds of virtue will obtain nothing. Obtaining nothing is not the fault of the Thus-Gone One, nor does the Thus-Gone One
