Land. In order to tame sentient beings, it is said in this way that there is no self. There is no person, no sentient being, no life, no powerful one, no lord of power, no knower, no seer, no doer, and no agent. Thus it was said. Monks, the self spoken of by the heretics is like letters transformed from the traces of insects, and it is the same. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One said that there is no self in the Buddha's teachings. This is to tame sentient beings. Because of knowing the time, it is said in this way that there is no self. Because there are causes and conditions, it is said that there is a self, just as a wise doctor knows whether milk is suitable for medicine or not. It is not like ignorant people clinging to self. Ignorant people cling to self as being as big as a thumb, or as big as a mustard seed, or as small as a dust particle. The self spoken of by the Thus-Gone One is not like that, so it is said that all dharmas are without self, but in reality, it is not without self. What is called self is the dharma that is true, correct, eternally abiding, becoming the master, unchanging, and immutable, that is called self. Just like that great doctor is skilled in medicinal milk. The Thus-Gone One is also like that. For the sake of individual beings, he said that all dharmas truly have a self, so you and the fourfold assembly should also diligently treat all dharmas in that way. Fourth fascicle. The Blessed One further said this to the monks. Monks, however much doubt you have about taming, ask as you please, and I will teach and explain, and make your minds satisfied. I have realized that all dharmas are empty of inherent nature. Monks, the Thus-Gone One does not think that it is merely realizing that all dharmas are empty of inherent nature. Monks, however much doubt you have about taming, now is the time to ask. Then, the monks said this to the Blessed One. Blessed One, we do not have wisdom, so we do not have the power to ask and request the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha.

Why is that? Because the realm of the Tathagata is inconceivable, so is the samadhi. The Teacher's teachings are also inconceivable, and we are of weak wisdom, without the power to ask and pray to the Tathagata. World Honored One, let me give an example. An old man of one hundred and twenty years, old and frail, constantly ill, without strength, weak and powerless, unable to be independent, a rich man goes to another country for profit, entrusting him with hundreds of thousands of gold coins, and says, "I entrust these jewels to you, and when I return in ten or twenty years, please return them to me." The old man took the jewels and soon died of illness, and his descendants were cut off, and all the jewels entrusted to him were lost. When the owner of the wealth returned, he could not find a place to retrieve the jewels. Is it appropriate to entrust it to a fool like that? Because he does not understand the inappropriate place, even if he returns from another country, all the jewels are lost, and there is no place to retrieve them. World Honored One, we Shravakas are also like this. After hearing the Tathagata's repeated and diligent teachings on the Vinaya, we cannot uphold it, nor can we make the Dharma abide for a long time, just like that old man accepted what others entrusted to him. Because we have no wisdom, we also have no ability to ask and consult about the Vinaya. The World Honored One said to the monks: If you ask me now, it will benefit all sentient beings, for the sake of happiness, so ask whatever you want. Then the monks said to the World Honored One: World Honored One, for example, a strong and healthy man, twenty-five years old, very young, with a handsome appearance, possessing a large amount of gold, silver, lapis lazuli and other treasures, as well as parents, wife, children and relatives. If someone entrusts him with treasures and says to him: I am going to another country for profit, I entrust these treasures to you, please return them to me when I come back. Then that person

Like protecting one's own property, it was guarded very carefully. Later, that man fell ill and gathered all those around him, saying: These jewels are entrusted to so-and-so; whenever they come to collect them, return them. The wise and knowledgeable one, able to discern what is entrusted and what is not, quickly retrieved all the jewels. Similarly, if this treasure of the Dharma, the Blessed One, were entrusted to those who are fond or to monks, it would not last long. Why is that? Because Mahākāśyapa and all the Śrāvakas are impermanent, just like that old man retrieving the wealth entrusted to another. Therefore, if this unsurpassed treasure of the Dharma is entrusted to the Bodhisattvas, the Bodhisattvas are skilled in asking and answering, so this treasure of the Dharma will endure and flourish greatly for immeasurable kalpas, and it will be for the benefit of sentient beings, just like entrusting jewels to a vigorous person. Therefore, great Bodhisattvas have the power to request and pray, but we, with wisdom like that of bees, do not have the power to request the profound Dharma of the Tathāgata. Having said this, they sat in silence. Then, the Blessed One praised them, saying: Very good, very good! Monks, you have well attained the mind free from defilements and the mind of an Arhat. I also thought so, that through these two causes, if this Great Vehicle is entrusted to the Bodhisattvas, then the sacred Dharma will endure. Then, the Blessed One addressed the sons and daughters of good families gathered in the assembly: My lifespan is immeasurable, and the individual perfect knowledge is also inexhaustible, but you may ask whatever you wish from the Vinaya and Abhidharma, and he spoke thus twice and three times. At that time, in that assembly, there was a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva residing in the city called Tala, a very young Brahmin by the name of Mahākāśyapa, who was blessed by the Buddha.
