First, the Chapter on Life. First, the Chapter on Life. The Noble Great Nirvana Sutra. Volume One. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus have I heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the city of Kusha, the birthplace of the great hero, near the Hiranyavati River, between two Sala trees. He was surrounded by a great Sangha of eighty hundred thousand great monks, seated in front, well-arranged. At that time, as the Blessed One was approaching Parinirvana on the fifteenth day of the middle spring month, by the blessing of the Blessed One, a great voice spread throughout the peak of existence, causing all sentient beings to hear this speech in their own languages. "Today, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, is compassionate to many beings. Having become the refuge and protector of all sentient beings, regarding all sentient beings equally like Rahula. The refuge of sentient beings, a friend, a support, and a place of dwelling, will now enter Nirvana. If there are ordinary beings who have hesitation and doubt, now is the time to ask and inquire, in this final moment, please ask and pray!" This speech was widely proclaimed. At that time, the Blessed One, in the morning, emitted various kinds of light from his face, namely blue, yellow, red, white, and crystal-like light, illuminating this three-thousand great-thousand world realm, and the space between the ten directions of the world realms. Those sentient beings dwelling therein in the six realms of existence, as soon as they touched that light, all their defilements of wrongdoing were purified. At that time, ordinary beings, seeing and hearing such signs, their minds were afflicted with great sorrow, and at once they wailed and wept, saying: "Alas! One who has become an extremely loving father and mother, alas! alas! Has he entered Nirvana?" Having said this, they struck their heads and chests with their palms, wailing and weeping. Some even trembled greatly in their bodies, and their hairs stood on end.

Having aged, they wept, merely suppressing their voices. At that time, this great earth, along with the mountains and oceans, also shook and stirred violently. Then, those beings greeted each other and, in order to dispel their sorrow, spoke thus: Alas, friends, do not grieve, but quickly let us go to the city of auspicious grass, the place where the mighty one arises, to where the Tathagata is. Let us bow our heads at the feet of the Tathagata and beseech the Tathagata not to fully enter nirvana, but to remain in the world for one kalpa, or for the duration of one kalpa's decrease. Some, holding each other's hands, said: The world is destroyed, the merit of beings is exhausted, and unwholesome deeds have arisen in the world. Friends, the Tathagata will surely pass into nirvana before long, let us go quickly. Some said thus: The world is destroyed! The world is destroyed! From now on, we have no protector or refuge, and we have become impoverished. Today, having been completely separated from the unsurpassed Bhagavan, to whom shall we turn for our doubts and hesitations from now on? At that time, the immeasurable great attendants, the venerable Mahakatyayana, the venerable Bakula, the venerable Ananda, and other great monks, were also touched by the light of the Buddha, and their bodies trembled, shaking so violently that it was unbearable. Their minds were also bewildered, and they cried out in lamentation, oppressed by such various forms of suffering. At that time, there were also eighty hundred thousand monks, all of whom were Arhats, masters of their minds, having done what needed to be done, having completely abandoned afflictions, all their senses completely subdued, powerful like great dragon kings, possessing the wisdom of emptiness, having later fully attained their own benefit, surrounded by sandalwood like a sandalwood grove, surrounded by lions like a lion king, possessing such immeasurable qualities, all of them truly sons of the Buddha. They also, as soon as the morning sun rose,
