The means of the earth are inconceivable. Son of good family, also constantly remember and strive in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. These three dharmas have the characteristics of non-difference, non-impermanence, and non-change. If someone perceives these three dharmas as different from each other, then that person does not abide in the three refuges and does not possess discipline, and cannot even attain the Bodhi of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. If one strives with the notion of permanence towards that which is inconceivable, then that is the place of refuge. Son of good family, for example, because there is a tree, there is shade. The Tathagata is also the same; because there is the Dharma of permanence, there is a place of refuge, and it is not impermanent. If someone says that the Tathagata is impermanent, then the Tathagata is not a place of refuge for gods and the world. Then, Bodhisattva Light Protector said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, for example, in foggy weather, even if there are growing trees, there is no shade. The Blessed One replied: Light Protector, one should not say that there is a tree but no shade, because it cannot be seen with the eye of flesh. Son of good family, the Tathagata is also the same; by nature, he always abides, does not change or transform, but because there is no eye of wisdom, he cannot be seen, just as one cannot see the shade of a tree in foggy weather. Even inferior people, after the Buddha's Nirvana, if someone says that the Tathagata is of the nature of impermanence, it is the same. If someone says that the Tathagata is different from the Dharma and the Sangha, then he will not become the three places of refuge. For example, your parents are separate and different, so it can be said that they are impermanent. Then, Bodhisattva Light Protector said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, it is very wonderful that I initially remember the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha as permanent, even between the parents of seven generations. Blessed One, I contemplate the Tathagata, the Dharma, and the Sangha.

One should diligently familiarize oneself with that which is not pervasive. Having familiarized myself with this, I will also extensively reveal this meaning to other beings. If there is one who does not believe in this, it is because they have long cultivated impermanence. I will regard them as frost or hail. Then, the Bhagavan praised the Bodhisattva Kashyapa (Light Protector): "Excellent! Excellent! You are one who greatly protects and completely upholds the sacred Dharma. Thus, by the root of virtue of protecting the Dharma and not deceiving sentient beings, by that very cause, you will have a long life and will know your former lives." This is the first chapter, called "Chapter on Life Span," from the Noble Great Nirvana Sutra. First: Chapter on Life Span.
