We also discussed what method we could use to obtain the essence of butter. The so-called essence of butter is the most supreme of all flavors in the world. Even if there is milk, there is a lack of a container to hold it. Again, it was said, 'We have a leather bag, let's put it in the leather bag.' Even if there is a place to put it, they do not know the method of fermentation and churning, so they cannot even obtain cream, let alone ordinary butter. At that time, those wicked thieves, desiring the essence of butter, added water again and again, and as a result, the milk, yogurt, and essence of butter were all spoiled. Foolish people are also like this; even if they have a little bit of virtue, it comes from the sublime Dharma of the Thus-Gone One. Why is that? Because after the Buddha, the Bhagavan, passed into complete Nirvana, they stole the virtuous Dharma of the Thus-Gone One, namely the aspects of morality, concentration, and wisdom, just as thieves steal cows. Foolish people may obtain a little morality, concentration, and wisdom, but because they lack the method of practice, they cannot liberate and realize it. Therefore, they cannot obtain constant morality, constant concentration, constant wisdom, or even liberation, just as those thieves do not know the method and cannot obtain the essence of butter. Just as those thieves added water because they wanted the essence of butter, so too are wicked people, desiring liberation, they proclaim: 'Self, sentient beings, life, person, Brahma, Ishvara, atoms, the nature of the world, morality, concentration, wisdom, liberation, non-perception, and neither perception nor non-perception'—these are Nirvana. Thus, they cannot obtain true liberation or Nirvana, just as those thieves cannot obtain the essence of butter. Wicked people, merely through a little pure conduct and the cause and condition of serving their parents, are born as gods in the heavenly realms, enjoying happiness.

Experiencing worldly things a little is like those thieves adding water to milk. Those base people do not understand that they can be reborn as gods in the heavens merely through a little celibacy and serving their parents. Furthermore, they do not understand keeping the precepts, practicing meditation, wisdom, and taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Because they do not understand these, they speak of permanence, bliss, self, and purity, but they do not understand them. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One, having departed into the world, taught and explained permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Just as when a Wheel-Turning King appears in the world, by the power of his merit, those wicked thieves scatter and flee. Because the cows did not die, the Wheel-Turning King entrusted them to someone skilled in herding. The one skilled in herding was able to obtain the essence of butter. Because there was the essence of butter, all sentient beings were free from the suffering of disease. When the Dharma Wheel-Turning King departed into the world, those base people were unable to teach morality, meditation, and wisdom, and they scattered and fled. At that time, the Bhagavan, for the benefit of sentient beings, taught and explained the worldly Dharma and the Dharma beyond the world to the Bodhisattvas, and the Bodhisattvas, the great beings, also obtained something like the essence of butter. Furthermore, countless, immeasurable sentient beings will obtain the unsurpassed Dharma, like nectar, which is the Dharma of permanence, bliss, self, and purity taught by the Thus-Gone One. Therefore, son of good family, the Thus-Gone One is of the nature of permanence and immutability, unlike the worldly, base people who say that Brahma and others are permanent. This so-called permanent Dharma, in short, refers to the Thus-Gone One, and not to others. Kashyapa, therefore, one should recognize the Dharmakaya of the Thus-Gone One. Kashyapa, any son or daughter of good family who constantly recites with a single-pointed mind the words 'The Buddha is permanent and abiding'

These two should be diligently practiced. O Lightsurya, any son of good family or daughter of good family who diligently practices these two sentences should know that that person follows me and reaches the place where I have reached. O son of good family, if one diligently practices these two sentences, abandoning characteristics, one should know that the Tathagata has conceived of complete nirvana. O son of good family, the meaning of complete nirvana is the Dharma-nature of the Buddha. Then, Bodhisattva Lightsurya said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is the meaning of what is called Dharma-nature? Blessed One, since I do not know what the meaning of Dharma-nature is, I request the Tathagata to compassionately explain it in detail. What is called Dharma-nature is separate from the body. Being separate from the body means that there is nothing at all. If there is nothing at all, then how can what is called the body be established? If the body can be established, then the body also has no Dharma-nature. If the body also has no Dharma-nature, then how can it be established? How should I understand these meanings?" After speaking, the Blessed One said to Bodhisattva Lightsurya: "O son of good family, you should not deny Dharma-nature in this way. There is no negation of what is called Dharma-nature. O son of good family, for example, the gods of the realm of non-perception possess the aggregate of form, but since they have no perception of form, how do those gods abide? How do they enjoy bliss? How do they engage in perception? How do they hear and see? These are the kinds of questions people ask. O son of good family, the realm of activity of the Tathagata is not known by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. O son of good family, one should not say that the body of the Tathagata is a Dharma of cessation. O son of good family, the Dharma of cessation is the realm of activity of the Buddha, not known by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. O son of good family, you should not contemplate or speculate on where the Tathagata abides, where he acts, where he sees, or what he enjoys. O son of good family, these meanings are not known or understood by you and others, but are the Dharma-body of the Buddha and various forms.
