That king and his fourfold retinue would not become sinful either, what need is there to mention the Tathagata? Son of good family, the Tathagata regards all sentient beings with such equanimous mind as if they were his only child. Whoever thinks in that way is called a Bodhisattva who perceives all sentient beings with an equanimous mind as if they were his only child. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva who diligently engages in that action will become long-lived and will also know his former abodes. Bodhisattva Light Protector again said to the Blessed One: As the Buddha has said, if a Bodhisattva diligently engages in equanimity and perceives all sentient beings as if they were his only child, he will become long-lived. It is not reasonable for the Tathagata to say that. Why is that? For example, if a wise person who is skilled in serving and also able to teach various dharmas goes home and beats his parents with stones or sticks. Parents are fields of merit, they only give benefit and happiness, and they are very difficult to meet, so they should be worshipped. If one harms them and torments them, then the words and deeds of the Dharma seeker are inconsistent and contradictory. The Tathagata is also like that. If a Bodhisattva diligently engages in equanimity and perceives all sentient beings as if they were his only child, he will become long-lived and know his former abodes without changing, and will always abide in the world. Why then is the Blessed One's life so short like that of an ordinary person? Does the Tathagata regard all sentient beings as enemies? What sins did the Blessed One commit in the past, and how many beings' lives did he sever, that his life is so short in this life, not even reaching a hundred years? The Blessed One said to Light Protector: Son of good family, why do you speak such disrespectful words in the presence of the Tathagata? The Tathagata's life is the most excellent and supreme among lives, and it is also the most excellent and supreme among permanent dharmas. Bodhisattva Light Protector again said to the Blessed One:

What is meant by the long life of the Tathagata? The Blessed One said to Light Increase: Son of good family, there are eight great rivers, namely the Ganga, Yamala, Sala, Alilavarda, Maha, Sindhu, Pakshu, and Sita. These eight great rivers, and all other tributaries, flow into the great ocean. Light Increase, similarly, the rivers of life of all beings, including gods, and those dwelling on earth and in the sky, all flow into the ocean of the Tathagata's life. Therefore, the life of the Tathagata is immeasurable. Light Increase, furthermore, just as four great rivers flow from Lake Mapam. The Tathagata is also the same, being the source of all life. Light Increase, just as among all permanent phenomena, space is supreme. The Tathagata is also the same, being the most excellent and supreme among all permanent phenomena. Light Increase, just as among all medicines, the essence of ghee is supreme. The Tathagata is also the same, being the supreme of life among all sentient beings. Bodhisattva Light Increase again asked the Blessed One: If the life of the Tathagata is such, then it is fitting that he should remain in the world for one kalpa or one kalpa less, constantly raining down the rain of the true Dharma. The Blessed One said: Light Increase, do not generate the thought of cessation or extinction towards the Tathagata. Light Increase, if there is a monk or a nun, or a male or female lay practitioner, or even a non-Buddhist, who possesses the five supernormal powers and has mastery over them, they can, for one kalpa or one kalpa less, freely walk, stay, sit, and sleep in empty space, and can emit flames from their left side and streams of water from their right side, and smoke can rise from the upper part of their body, and they can even transform into a great heap of fire. If they wish to remain in the world until the end of their lifespan, they can remain as they wish, having mastery over the length of their life. Even by merely obtaining such five supernormal powers, they possess the power of wish-fulfillment, how much more so the Tathagata, who possesses all

Not to mention having attained the power to rule over all. Not to mention living for half a kalpa, one kalpa, a hundred kalpas, a hundred thousand kalpas, immeasurable kalpas. Therefore, the Tathagata should be understood as having a permanent body, having an unchanging dharma. The body of the Tathagata is a manifestation body, not a body of food. In order to liberate sentient beings, it is shown to be like a poisonous tree, therefore it should be understood as showing complete nirvana. Light Holder, therefore, the Tathagata should be understood as having a permanent dharma, having an unchanging dharma. You and others should strive diligently for the ultimate meaning. After striving diligently, you should also explain it extensively to others. Then, the Bodhisattva Light Holder again asked the Bhagavan, saying: What is the difference and distinction between the dharma that transcends the world and the dharma of the world? As the Buddha said, the Buddha is also a permanent dharma, an unchanging dharma, then the worldly Brahma god is also permanent, the Ishvara god is also permanent, the unchanging dharma of "self" is also permanent, nature is also permanent, and atoms are also permanent. If this is the case, if the Tathagata is also a permanent dharma, then why does the Tathagata not clearly show permanence? If permanence is not clearly shown, then what is the difference and distinction? From the Brahma god to atoms and nature being permanent, it is not clearly shown either. The Bhagavan said to Light Holder: For example, a householder has many cows of different colors, but they are all entrusted to one shepherd, who seeks where there is grass and water and grazes there. This is not for yogurt and milk, but for wanting the essence of ghee. Later, the householder died, and the cows were driven away by thieves. Those thieves had no women, so they milked the cows and drank it separately. Later, those thieves said to each other, "The great householder used to raise so many cows, not just for yogurt and milk, but only for wanting the essence of ghee, now...
