They meditated well on the concept of selflessness. Then, the monks said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, we are not only diligent in the concept of no-self, but also diligent in the concept of suffering, emptiness, impermanence, and no-self. Blessed One, for example, a drunk person, because his mind is confused, thinks that mountains, rivers, rocks, trees, houses, sun, moon, and stars are all spinning. Blessed One, if one is not diligent in the concept of suffering, impermanence, and no-self, etc., that person cannot be called a noble one, because without wisdom, he wanders in samsara. Blessed One, therefore, we are very diligent in those concepts." At that time, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Listen carefully and keep it in mind. Your analogy of a drunk person only understands the words and letters, but does not understand the meaning. So, what is the meaning? For example, just as a drunk person thinks that the sun and moon, etc., are spinning when they are not, ordinary people are the same. Because they are covered by pervasive afflictive ignorance, they generate a reversed mind, perceiving no-self as self, impermanence as permanence, impurity as purity, and suffering as happiness. Although they have the same perception as those covered by pervasive afflictions, because they do not understand the meaning, just like that drunk person, they create the illusion of samsara in a place that is not samsara. The so-called 'self' is the meaning of 'Buddha.' The so-called 'permanence' is the meaning of 'Dharmakaya.' The so-called 'happiness' is the meaning of 'Nirvana.' The so-called 'purity' is the meaning of 'Dharma.' Why? Monks, your clinging to self is the arrogance of those who say they wander in samsara. If, as you say, we are also diligent in the concepts of impermanence, suffering, and no-self, it is completely meaningless. There is no real meaning in those three diligences, so be diligent in what is not that.

I shall explain what surpasses the three dharmas mentioned earlier. To perceive suffering as happiness and happiness as suffering is a reversed dharma. To perceive impermanence as permanence and permanence as impermanence is a reversed dharma. To perceive selflessness as self and self as selflessness is a reversed dharma. To perceive impurity as purity and purity as impurity is a reversed dharma. These four reversed dharmas are not understood by anyone who should properly and diligently attend to them. Monks, cultivate the perception of happiness in the dharma of suffering! Cultivate the perception of permanence in impermanence! Cultivate the perception of self in selflessness! Cultivate the perception of purity in impurity! In the world, there are also permanence, happiness, self, and purity. Beyond the world, there are also permanence, happiness, self, and purity. Worldly dharmas can be spoken of but are meaningless. Transcendent dharmas can be spoken of and are also meaningful. Why is that? Because worldly dharmas are accompanied by the four reversals, so their meaning is not understood. How is that? Due to reversed perception, reversed mind, reversed view, and the three reversals, worldly people see happiness as suffering, permanence as impermanence, self as selflessness, and purity as impurity, which is called reversal. Because of reversal, worldly people know the words but do not understand the meaning. What is meant by meaning here? Selflessness is called samsara. Self is called the Tathagata. Impermanence is the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Permanence is the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata. Suffering is all the non-Buddhists. Happiness is complete Nirvana. Impurity is conditioned dharma. Purity is the true dharma of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, therefore it is called non-reversal. Thus, the non-reversed knows both the words and understands the meaning. Who is reversed
