Finally, the arrangements were completed, and it was time to offer to the Bhagavan and the great Sangha. Cunda, you should know that the various rays of light emitted by the Tathagata are not without cause and condition. Having heard this, Cunda sat in silence. The Bhagavan said to Cunda: It is time for you to arrange offerings and offer them to the Buddha and the Sangha. The Tathagata is about to enter complete Nirvana. He said this two or three times. At that time, as soon as Cunda heard the Bhagavan say this, he cried out loudly, weeping and wailing, saying: Alas! Alas! The world is about to be destroyed! And he said to the mandala of attendants: We prostrate with our five limbs to the ground, and with one voice, let us pray that the Bhagavan will not pass into Nirvana. The Bhagavan said to Cunda: Do not be distressed and weep, but regard my body like a tree in the water, like a mirage, like a water bubble, like an illusion, like a city of Gandharvas, like an unbaked clay pot, like the flash of lightning, like a drawing on water, like a prisoner being led to execution, like a ripe fruit, like rotten flesh, like the exhaustion of thread in weaving, like a mortar! Regard all conditioned things like food mixed with poison! See that all conditioned dharmas have many faults and defects! Then, Cunda prayed to the Bhagavan in this way: If the Tathagata does not rejoice in abiding in the world for a long time, how can I not weep? Alas! Alas! The world is about to be destroyed! Bhagavan, for the sake of compassion for us and all sentient beings, please abide in the world for a long time and do not pass into Nirvana! The Bhagavan said to Cunda: Do not say, 'Please abide in the world for a long time for the sake of compassion for us,' for it is for the sake of compassion for you and all beings that I am about to pass into complete Nirvana. Why is that? Because the Dharma-nature of the Buddhas is also like this, and conditioned things are also like this. Then, the Bhagavan spoke the verses:

Thus was this chapter declared. All compounded things are impermanent by their very nature. Because they arise and do not remain, pacification is the greatest bliss. Cunda, you should know that all compounded things are mixed, and all dharmas are without self, impermanent, and do not last long. This body has many faults, look at it like a water bubble, therefore do not weep. Then Cunda asked the Blessed One: So it is, so it is. Just as the Blessed One said. The Tathagata's complete passing into nirvana should also be shown as a means, but I cannot bear it even though I do not grieve. Moreover, if I think deeply, joy and delight arise. The Blessed One said to Cunda: Well done, very well done. It is good to know that the Tathagata shows nirvana in a way that is in accordance with sentient beings. Cunda, listen carefully. For example, bird tracks on the ground, in the hot summer, all gather in the sea that is not wet. The Blessed One is also like that, he went to that place. Cunda, do not think of the Tathagata's life span as long or short, all dharmas are like illusions, the Tathagata does not cling to anything by means of skillful means. Why is that? Because it is the nature of the Buddha. Cunda, the last offering you have prepared, I accept it in order to liberate you from the ocean of samsara. In that, any being, whether god, human, or including the world, who prepares the last offering and offers it to me, will obtain the immovable fruit and always experience happiness. Why is that? Because I am the field of merit for all sentient beings. If you also want to become a field of merit for sentient beings, then quickly offer the prepared offering without hesitation. Then, Cunda, in order to liberate all sentient beings, bowed his head and shed tears, and said to the Blessed One: Very well, Blessed One. It is very rare that I become a field of merit. If the Tathagata enters nirvana or does not enter nirvana, and we, the Shravakas

The wisdom of a Pratyekabuddha is like a bee, therefore the Tathagata's complete Nirvana and non-Nirvana cannot be measured. Then Cunda and his retinue shed tears and wept, circumambulating the Tathagata, offering incense and flowers, and after making offerings, they rose from their seats with Manjushri and went to prepare offerings. As soon as they left, at that time the earth also shook in six ways, up to the realm of Brahma. There are two kinds of earth tremors: tremor and great tremor. A slight tremor is called a tremor. A great tremor is called a great tremor. A small sound is called a tremor. A loud sound is called a great tremor. Only the earth shaking is called a tremor. When mountains, rivers, trees, oceans, and everything else shake, it is called a great tremor. Shaking in one direction is called a tremor. Rotating and shaking everywhere is called a great tremor. Moving is called a tremor. When moving, the minds of all sentient beings also move, which is called a great tremor. When a Bodhisattva first abides and descends from the sky to Jambudvipa, it is called a great tremor. The first birth, renunciation, attainment of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, turning the wheel of Dharma, and entering complete Nirvana are all called great tremors. Now the Tathagata is also about to enter complete Nirvana, therefore this earth also trembles greatly. Then, as soon as the gods, nagas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans heard this, the hairs on their bodies stood on end, and they all wept and prayed in unison with verses, saying: Homage to the Charioteer! We pray. Because we have been abandoned by the great sage, we have no protector or refuge. Because the Bhagavan has passed into Nirvana, we are sinking in the ocean of suffering. The ignorance and sorrow in our hearts are like a cow that has lost its calf. Poor, without protector or refuge, like being very sick.
