Because he surpassed a thousand, he was named the giant who could defeat a thousand. The Tathagata is also the same as this, because he has completely conquered the demons of affliction, the demons of the aggregates, the demons of the sons of the gods, and the demons of death, therefore the Tathagata is the most excellent in the three realms. Just as one giant can defeat a thousand people. Therefore, the Tathagata is also endowed with various immeasurable qualities, so the Tathagata is also named the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha. Manjushri, it is not appropriate to think that the Tathagata is in accordance with the conditioned phenomena. For example, when a wealthy householder has a son, and the astrologer examines him and judges, 'He has a short life,' as soon as the parents hear this, they know that he will not be able to inherit the family lineage, so they will not grieve for him, but regard him as just like a blade of grass. For those who have a short life, neither monks nor Brahmins respect young boys and girls. If the Tathagata is in accordance with the conditioned phenomena, then the gods, humans, and all sentient beings in the world would not respect him. The true and unchanging Dharma spoken by the Tathagata would also become without a basis. Therefore, Manjushri, it is not appropriate to say that the Tathagata is in accordance with the conditioned phenomena. Manjushri, for example, a poor woman who has no place to go, no support, no protection, is also afflicted by illness, and lacks food and drink, wanders around, and goes to a family's house and gives birth to a child, that family does not let her stay and drives her away. That woman, not long after giving birth to the child, takes the child in her arms and goes to another place, and on the way is troubled by wind, rain, and hail, and encounters mosquitoes, horseflies, and poisonous snakes. Even if the Ganges River blocks the way, even though that river is very deep and turbulent, she carries the child in her arms and crosses it. Then both mother and child sink into the water. In this way, that woman, because of the merit of loving and cherishing her child, is immediately reborn as a Brahma god after death. Manjushri, sons of good family, for the sake of protecting the sacred Dharma, the Tathagata

Should one say that the Tathagata is in accordance with conditioned phenomena? One should not say that he is not in accordance with conditioned phenomena, because I am blinded by ignorance and have no eye of wisdom. The sacred Dharma of the Tathagata is inconceivable and cannot be contemplated. Therefore, one should not say that the Tathagata is definitely conditioned or definitely unconditioned. One who sees correctly should not say that the Tathagata is definitely unconditioned. Why is that? Because it generates the Dharma that makes all sentient beings virtuous and has compassion for many beings. Just as when a poor woman crosses the Ganges River, she thinks of her beloved child and even loses her body and life, so too, son of good family, a Bodhisattva who protects the Dharma, even when his body and life are at stake, should not say that the Tathagata is in accordance with conditioned phenomena or that the Tathagata is in accordance with unconditioned phenomena. The Great Nirvana Sutra, Volume Three. Therefore, saying that the Tathagata is in accordance with the unconditioned will transform into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, just as the poor woman was born as a Brahma. Why is that? Because of protecting the Dharma. What is protecting the Dharma? It is saying that the Tathagata is unconditioned. Son of good family, that person may not expect liberation, but he will naturally attain liberation. Just as the poor woman may not expect to become a Brahma, but she will naturally be born as a Brahma. Manjushri, for example, if a person goes on a long journey and becomes exhausted on the road, he lies down to rest in another person's house, and that house is burned by fire, and he is very frightened and thinks, "I will surely be eaten by a demon and die." Because of shame and embarrassment, he wraps his body in clothes. There, after he dies, he is born as a god in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. Then again, eighty times he is born as the Great Brahma King. Then, after a hundred thousand years, he is born as a Wheel-Turning King among humans. That person will never be born in the three lower realms, but will go from one higher realm to another of great bliss.
