Then, having manifested many mandalas of retinues, and having invisibly subdued the rays of light from their bodies, having performed the activity, they again entered the door of the face. At that time, the retinues of gods, humans, asuras, and so on, saw the Buddha's rays of light again entering the door of the face, and all were terrified, all the hairs on their bodies stood on end, and they said to each other, "The Tathagata has emitted rays of light and then withdrawn them, this is not without cause or condition, but is certainly a sign that all actions in the ten directions have been completed, and that he will finally pass into complete nirvana." Alas, alas, the Tathagata has abandoned the four immeasurables, and will not even accept the offerings of gods and humans. From this day forward, the sun of wisdom will also set, and the supreme ship of Dharma will also sink. Alas, how sad, the world will be tormented by great suffering!" Having said this, they beat their chests and stamped their feet, wailing incessantly, their bodies trembling to the point of being unbearable, and blood even flowed from the pores of their hair. At that time, in that mandala of retinues, the son of a carpenter from the city of Kusinara, the lay practitioner Cunda, was gathered together with fifty like-minded retinues. In order to obtain the fruits of virtue for those including the world, he abandoned his previous manner, rose from his seat, placed his upper garment on one shoulder, placed the kneecap of his right knee on the ground, folded his palms and shed tears in the direction of where the Blessed One was, bowed his head to the feet of the Buddha, and said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, please, together with the Sangha of monks, accept this our final offering, for the sake of liberating immeasurable sentient beings. Blessed One, from this day forward, we have no protector, no refuge, no friend, no support, no place, we are extremely poor, so we only ask the Tathagata to remain for a short time, not to enter nirvana. Blessed One, for the sake of compassion, please accept this our final offering, and then depart into complete nirvana. Blessed One, for example, a royal lineage, or a Brahmin...

Or perhaps a Candala, or perhaps impoverished, because of poverty going to another country, engaging in the labor of cultivating fields, taming the cultivated land, the field also being fertile and the land also being level, and if there are no thorns and no irrigation ditches in the field, one can only rely on the rain from the sky. Blessed One, what is called taming the cultivated land is an example of the seven actions of body and speech. What is called the fertile field and level land is an example of wisdom. What is called the absence of thorns and irrigation ditches in the field is an example of afflictions. Blessed One, we also have tamed cultivated land, and also fertile fields, but if we do not clear the irrigation ditches in the field, we can only rely on the rain of nectar of the Tathagata. The four poor castes are us, we are poor, lacking the precious jewel of the unsurpassed perfect and complete Dharma, because of poverty, for the sake of compassion, please eliminate the suffering of our poverty, and liberate the countless sentient beings who are completely tormented by suffering. Although our offerings are very small, may all the many retinues of the Tathagata enjoy them, Blessed One, we have no protector, no refuge, no friend, please consider us with compassion like Rahula. Then, the Blessed One, the all-knowing, the unsurpassed, the tamer of men, the charioteer, said to Cunda: "Good, good! I will eliminate your poverty, and I will pour the rain of the unsurpassed Dharma on your body, and cause the sprout of Dharma to grow. You now desire to obtain longevity, beauty, strength, happiness, and unobstructed individual correct knowledge, I will always grant you longevity, beauty, strength, happiness, and unobstructed individual correct knowledge. Why is that? Cunda, because of giving the alms of food, you will obtain two kinds of fruits without difference. Which two? Having partaken, one obtains the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, and having partaken, one will attain complete Nirvana. I also, because I have partaken of this last of your offerings, your perfection of generosity has been completed." Then Cunda said to the Blessed One:
