To the one who had become a youth, he spoke thus: "Manjushri, why does the great Arhat Kashyapa strike the ghanta?" He replied, "World Honored One, I think it is to expel me." The World Honored One said, "Manjushri, in order to prevent you from developing great disbelief, purify yourself, show your realm of conduct, and please the great Shravakas." Then, Manjushri, having become a youth, at that time entered the Samadhi of the Bodhisattva called "Truly Showing All Buddha-fields." As soon as Manjushri, having become a youth, entered that Samadhi, from then on, in the ten directions, in Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, all the monks who cultivated virtues and spoke of virtues, all like the great Kashyapa, appeared to be striking the ghanta in order to expel Manjushri, who had become a youth. The World Honored One said to me, "Kashyapa, why do you strike the ghanta?" I said to the World Honored One, "World Honored One, Manjushri, who has become a youth, dwells in the company of nuns for three summer months, and wishes to perform the Pravāraṇa with the Sangha of fully purified monks. I strike the ghanta to expel him." Then the World Honored One emitted light from all his bodies and said to me, "Kashyapa, look carefully at what appears in the ten directions." When I looked at that time, I saw in the ten directions, in immeasurable and countless worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, all the Arhats like myself were striking the ghanta to expel Manjushri, who had become a youth. In all those worlds, I also saw Manjushri, who had become a youth, sitting at the feet of those Buddhas, the World Honored Ones. The World Honored One said to me, "Great Kashyapa, do you want to expel this Manjushri, who has become a youth, who is sitting before me, or those who are sitting at the feet of the Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, in the immeasurable and countless worlds of the ten directions?" At that time, I, in a state of shame,...

Thinking of throwing it on the ground, but even wanting to throw it, I couldn't, and the sound came continuously. Just like in the garden of Prince Jeta, in all the Buddha's pure lands, the sound is without interruption, without increase or decrease, without arising, and appears just like that. At that time, I prostrated to the two feet of the Blessed One, and then I said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, I have one-sided knowledge, because I have not understood the inconceivable realm of the Bodhisattvas, so I ask for forgiveness from Manjushri Kumara who struck the ghanta. The Blessed One said to me: Great Kashyapa, all these Manjushri Kumaras that you see in the Buddha's pure lands, are staying for three months in the summer in order to fully ripen sentient beings in the householder's home. Great Kashyapa, this Manjushri Kumara, even if he vowed to spend the summer retreat among the consorts of the queen in the great city of Shravasti, he has fully ripened five hundred women from the consorts of King Prasenajit, never turning back from the unexcelled perfect enlightenment. Five hundred men, five hundred children, five hundred girls, and five hundred prostitutes were also established in the unexcelled perfect enlightenment, never turning back. Many sentient beings also acted in the Hearer Vehicle and made them go to the heavens. I said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what kind of Dharma did Manjushri Kumara preach that so many sentient beings were fully ripened? The Blessed One said: Great Kashyapa, you should ask Manjushri Kumara what kind of Dharma he preached that so many sentient beings were fully ripened. He will answer you. I said to Manjushri Kumara: Manjushri, what kind of Dharma did you preach that so many sentient beings were fully ripened? Manjushri said: Venerable Great Kashyapa, those sentient beings are not fully ripened by preaching the Dharma. What is the reason for that? Venerable, Ka-

Great Protector, there are also beings who become fully ripened through joyful play. Or through complete acceptance, or through subjugation, or through giving, or through extreme giving, or through poverty and destitution, or through great splendor, or through the magic of universal expression, or through the magic of subsequent manifestation, or through the magic of miraculous power, or through the form of Indra, or through the form of Brahma, or through the form of the world protectors, or through the form of a universal monarch, or through the body of a Buddha, or through the form of a Pratyekabuddha, or through the form of a Shravaka, or through frightening threats, or through harsh words, or through gentle words, or through beneficial assistance, they also become fully ripened. Why is that? Great Protector, the conduct of beings is diverse, and it is only through diverse actions that they become fully ripened. Great Protector, those beings who are thus fully ripened will later become very tame through the teaching of the Dharma. Then I said this: Manjushri, how many realms of beings have you fully ripened through this conduct? He said: Great Protector, as many as the realm of Dharma. I said: Manjushri, how many is the realm of Dharma? He said: As much as the realm of space. I said: How much is the realm of space? He said: As many as the realm of beings. Great Protector, in that way, the realm of Dharma, the realm of space, and the realm of beings are non-dual and indivisible. Then I said this: Manjushri, if in this way no being whatsoever is completely liberated from suffering, then does the appearance of the Buddha not become meaningless? He said: Great Protector, for example, a person is afflicted with a bile fever and becomes delirious in various ways, and some people think that this person is possessed by a demon. Then a skilled doctor comes and, through actions such as administering ghee, calms the bile fever, and then that person no longer becomes delirious in various ways. Great Protector, what do you think? Did a god, a Naga, or a Yaksha appear in that?
