Not being angry shows joy. Performing actions shows equanimity. Being without pride shows wisdom. Generating the mind of enlightenment shows that the lineage of the Three Jewels is not severed. Furthermore, being unborn shows accordance with all happiness. When this explanation of the teaching was given, among the sons of the gods who came together with the evil demon, five hundred sons of the gods generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. They said to the Bhagavan, 'Bhagavan, may we also be in accordance with the teachings of the Buddha.' They spoke these words. The Bhagavan also smiled. I asked for the reason for the smile. After asking, the Bhagavan said this: 'Kunga (Ananda), have you seen these monks who are emanations of demons?' I reported to the Bhagavan, 'Bhagavan, I have seen them. Sugata, I have seen them.' The Bhagavan said to me, 'Kunga (Ananda), in the future time, in the last five hundred years of the degenerate age, when the holy Dharma is destroyed, most of the monks in my teachings will be like this: their lower garments will not be properly worn, their upper robes will not be properly sewn, their clothes will be worn roughly, their bowls will be broken, they will be without mindfulness, their conduct will be unpleasant, they will be holding canes in their hands, their noses will be flat, and there will be blind people, lame people, cripples, those with incomplete limbs, those with bad flesh on their bodies, and those afflicted with various diseases. Why is that? Kunga (Ananda), like this, at that time, most of the monks will be particularly focused on offerings, relying on gain and respect, and being busy with various affairs, abandoning discipline, breaking the Pratimoksha vows, transgressing boundaries, particularly focusing on this life, and not focusing on future lives. They will be like this: not for the sake of the Dharma, but for the sake of offerings, blind people, lame people, cripples, those with bad flesh on their bodies, and those afflicted with various diseases will come and those who arrive will be ordained. They will be given full ordination. Kunga (Ananda), at that time, at that time, my teachings will become unbearable to look at and unbearable to listen to.

Ro! The gods will also become displeased. The maras will rejoice, be happy, and become indifferent. I said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, why do the evil maras rejoice, be happy, and become indifferent?" The Blessed One said: "Ananda, it is like this: those foolish individuals themselves become the executors of the work of the mara. The evil mara will not strive to hinder them. Why is that? Because the evil mara does not seek the faults of those who do not strive. The evil mara seeks the faults of those monks who, in order to have no more rebirths, abide in diligence as if their heads and clothes were on fire. Ananda, therefore, in order to attain what has not been attained, to realize what has not been realized, and to manifest what has not been manifested, strive! Give! Be diligent! Cut off the forces of the mara! Make the teachings of the Tathagata flourish! Completely uphold the sacred Dharma! Worship me with offerings of Dharma! This is my instruction to you." When this teaching was spoken, five thousand monks abandoned the aggregates of life, saying: "May we not see the destruction of the Blessed One's sacred Dharma." Having spoken these words, they manifested in the sky above and burned themselves with their own fire element. Hundreds of thousands of gods also made offerings to them. Two hundred monks generated a Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, and pure, towards the Dharma. Two hundred monks were liberated from the outflows without grasping. Thirty-two thousand bodhisattvas obtained forbearance in the Dharma of non-arising. Indra, Brahma, and the guardians of the world, together with their retinues, also folded their palms before the Blessed One and said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, may we not see the destruction of the Blessed One's sacred Dharma. Blessed One, may those into whose ears this category of Dharma has entered never become lazy in their minds."

and not be pervaded by defilements, and that those things arising from the works of demons may not become their masters, I beseech the Blessed One to remain and protect for a long time.” Thus he spoke. The venerable Śāriputra, whatever I have directly witnessed of the various miraculous transformations performed by Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta, and the various transformations of teaching the Dharma, are just those. Then, the venerable Mahākāśyapa said this to the venerable Śāriputra: “Venerable Śāriputra, I too have directly witnessed some of the miraculous displays of transformation performed by Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta. Venerable Śāriputra, I know that not long after the Blessed One attained complete perfect enlightenment, and when I had not long since become ordained, Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta first came to this world from the Buddha-field of the Tathāgata Ratnavṛkṣa, in order to behold the Blessed One, to pay homage, and to make offerings. The Blessed One also made a vow to reside in retreat in the Jeta Grove of Śrāvastī, in the Garden of Anāthapiṇḍada. Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta also vowed to reside there for three months of retreat. However, we never saw him again in the presence of the Blessed One, within the Saṃgha, in the preaching hall, during the upoṣatha, or in activities such as paying homage. Then, after the three months of retreat had passed, Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta showed his face during the upoṣatha and the pravāraṇā. At that time, I said to him: ‘Mañjuśrī, where have you been staying during those three months of retreat?’ He replied: ‘Venerable Mahākāśyapa, right here in the great city of Śrāvastī, among the consorts of King Prasenajit.’ At that time, I thought: ‘A bodhisattva like this should not perform the pravāraṇā together with the Saṃgha of bhikṣus who are with faults and completely pure.’ So I came out of the Saṃghārāma's corridor and struck the ghaṇṭā in order to expel Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta. At that time, the Blessed One said to Mañjuśrī
