of Samadhi, and the Samadhi called the Guide. Son of good family, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Avalokiteśvara is endowed with these Samadhis. In each of his pores dwell hundreds of thousands of Samadhis. Son of good family, thus the accumulation of merit of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Avalokiteśvara is immeasurable. Such an accumulation of merit is not even possessed by the Tathāgatas, what need to mention the Bodhisattvas? Chapter Three. Son of good family, in the past when I became a Bodhisattva, I went to the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka) with five hundred merchants. Carrying many goods by carts, loads, sacks, baskets, yaks, cows, donkeys, etc., we went to the island of Simhala. Passing through villages, cities, suburbs, hamlets, and markets, before reaching the island of Simhala, we found a good large ship. I asked the helmsman, "Which way does the wind blow? Does it blow towards the island of jewels, or does it blow towards the island of rice? Or does it blow towards the island of the Rakshasis?" The helmsman said, "The breeze is blowing towards the island of Simhala, may the gods know." Then, the large ship was launched and sailed towards the island of Simhala. However, the Rakshasis dwelling on the island of Simhala released untimely winds, and the large ship was blown to pieces, and the merchants fell into the water. After swimming, they approached the shore. Then, five hundred Rakshasis transformed into the form of young women, making a noisy sound, and came near the shore, begging with cloths of upper garments. They each wrung out their own clothes.

This is a treasure trove of dwellings! For those without refuge, this is a treasure trove of refuge! These are your houses of food! Houses of drink! Places that make gardens happy! Places that make ponds happy! After saying these words, those ogresses each led a man back to their respective homes. Among those ogresses, the eldest led me to her home and satisfied me with food that possessed the supreme taste of divine ambrosia. Having been satisfied, she began to play with me. She was satisfied with human pleasure from me, and thus two, three, up to seven days passed. One day, she lay down and fell asleep, and I saw her laughing sweetly, and I was amazed. I had never seen or heard anyone laugh sweetly while sleeping. I thought, and then I said to her, "Why are you laughing?" She replied, "These are ogresses dwelling in the island of Simhala! They will take your life!" Then I asked her, "How shall I know that these are ogresses?" She said, "If you do not believe, then proceed along the path to the right. There is a tall iron city there, without windows or stables. There, hundreds and thousands of merchants are trapped and lost, some alive, some dead. If you do not believe in this way, then proceed along that path! Proceed along that path and realize it! Then you will believe me." Having said this, she then overwhelmed me with a sleep called the "Net of Foolishness." Then, that Bodhisattva, at the time of night, went forth, holding a sword that appeared like the moon, called "That Which Sustains Me," and took the path to the right. Gradually, he went to the iron city, and although he circled around it, he did not see a gate. Then, in that great iron city, there was a champaka tree, and he climbed it. Then I made the sound of spitting. Those merchant men said, "Great merchant lord, please know! We have been cast into the iron city!" Having said this, each day, hundreds upon hundreds of people are led away and eaten. After being eaten, the bones are thrown into that very iron city.

Those people also spoke to me as before, and then I descended from the Champaka tree and quickly went along the path on the right, and then returned. Then, the messenger said, 'Great captain, did you see?' I said, 'I saw.' I said, 'Do you remember what I told you?' Then I asked him what the method was. Then, the messenger said this: 'What divine power can bring one safely and without affliction from the island of Simhala, and see Jambudvipa again?' I asked him, 'By what means can you show the way to come from the island of Simhala?' The messenger said this: 'There is a divine horse king named Balaha, who heals the lowly and the poor. Know that the horse king Balaha knows all the medicinal secrets, and he rolls back and forth on the golden sandy beach. After rolling back and forth, he shakes his body. After shaking, he says: Who goes to the other shore? Who goes to the other shore? You should say: God, I go to the other shore.' After hearing this instruction, he approached the Rakshasi and slept with her. She woke up and said, 'Holy son, your body is a little cold.' I said to her, 'I went outside the city to urinate and defecate, so my body became cold.' After she said that, she fell asleep again and woke up when the sun rose. Then, she said to the merchants, 'Come here, let's go outside the city.' They all went outside the city. After they went outside the city, they rested. After resting, she asked, 'How do your wives treat you with affection?' Some said, 'They treat me with great affection.' Some said, 'They treat me with food that has the best flavors of the gods.' Some said, 'They treat me with various kinds of clothes.' Some said, 'They treat me with crowns, earrings, and strings of pearls.'
