Having known this, at that time, no ascetic or Brahmin, or god, or demon, or Brahma, or anyone could turn this Dharma wheel in the world in accordance with the Dharma, namely: This is suffering. This is the origin of suffering. This is the cessation of suffering. This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering. Thus, it was recited three times and turned in twelve aspects. Monks, thus, with ignorance as the condition, there is formation. With formation as the condition, there is consciousness. With consciousness as the condition, there is name and form. With name and form as the condition, there are the six sense bases. With the six sense bases as the condition, there is contact. With contact as the condition, there is feeling. With feeling as the condition, there is craving. With craving as the condition, there is grasping. With grasping as the condition, there is becoming. With becoming as the condition, there is birth. With birth as the condition, there arise old age, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation. Thus, this great mass of suffering comes into being. With the cessation of ignorance, formation ceases. With the cessation of formation, consciousness ceases. With the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease. With the cessation of name and form, the six sense bases cease. With the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases. With the cessation of contact, feeling ceases. With the cessation of feeling, craving ceases. With the cessation of craving, grasping ceases. With the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases. With the cessation of becoming, birth ceases. With the cessation of birth, old age, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation cease. Thus, this great mass of suffering ceases. Thus, the profound meaning of dependent origination is also extensively and thoroughly shown. Monks, thus, that Bhagavan, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, with his great power of direct knowledge, overwhelming all, turned this Dharma wheel, surrounded by the world including gods, demons, and Brahma, and by the assembly including ascetics and Brahmins. In that instant, moment, and brief time, sixty kotis of hundreds of thousands of trillions of beings, without grasping, had their minds completely liberated from the defilements. They all

All were endowed with the three knowledges and the six supernormal knowledges, and meditated on the eight liberations. Monks, then gradually, the Blessed One taught the Dharma to them twice, and likewise taught the Dharma three times, even four times. Monks, then each time the Blessed One taught the Dharma, countless billions of beings, like the sands of the Ganges River, without exception, their minds were liberated from the defilements. Monks, after that, the Blessed One's community of disciples became countless. Monks, then at that time, those sixteen princes, while still young, developed faith and went forth from home into homelessness, and all of them became novices. They were intelligent and clear, sharp-witted and skilled, having served many hundreds of thousands of Buddhas, striving for the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Monks, then those sixteen novices, with the great wisdom of supernormal knowledge, overwhelmed the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Foe-Destroyer, the Perfectly Complete Buddha, and requested him, saying: Blessed One, these many billions of disciples of the Thus-Gone One have completely achieved great magical powers, strength, and authority through the Blessed One's teaching of the Dharma. Blessed One, since that is so, for the sake of compassion for us, please teach the Dharma, beginning with the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. We will also follow the Thus-Gone One and learn. Blessed One, we wish to see the wisdom of the Thus-Gone One. Blessed One, you are our witness in this matter. Blessed One, you know the thoughts of all beings, and you also know our thoughts. Monks, then at that time, seeing those young princes and novices who had gone forth, half of those who were in the retinue of the wheel-turning king, that is, eighty-four billion nayutas of beings, also went forth. Monks, then the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Foe-Destroyer, the Perfectly Complete Buddha

The Buddha on Earth Knowing the requests of those novices by the power of his great supernormal wisdom, after twenty thousand kalpas had passed, he extensively taught the Dharma category called the "White Lotus of the Sacred Dharma," a very extensive great sutra, to the Bodhisattvas. He extensively revealed that which is completely embraced by all Buddhas to all those four assemblies. Monks, then again at that time, the sixteen novices who were taught by the Bhagavan took it up and held it. They completely understood it. Monks, then the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Complete Buddha, who subdues with the power of great supernormal wisdom, prophesied those sixteen novices to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Monks, then again, the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Complete Buddha, who subdues with the power of great supernormal wisdom, when teaching this Dharma category, the Shravakas and those sixteen novices were pleased. Many billions of trillions of beings became doubtful. Monks, then the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Complete Buddha, who subdues with the power of great supernormal wisdom, having shown this Dharma category of the White Lotus of the Sacred Dharma in an inconceivable way for a hundred thousand kalpas, entered the monastery in order to enter into inner perfect concentration. Monks, the Tathagata remained in the monastery for eighty-four thousand kalpas in this way, and entered into inner perfect concentration. Monks, then those sixteen novices, knowing that the Bhagavan had entered into inner perfect concentration, each prepared a Dharma seat, a lion throne, and seated upon them, extensively revealed this Dharma category of the White Lotus of the Sacred Dharma to the four assemblies for eighty-four thousand kalpas. Monks, at that time, each novice Bodhisattva truly revealed to countless billions of trillions of beings, sixty-six times the sands of the Ganges.
