Seventh, the chapter on past conduct. Seventh, the chapter on past conduct. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, beyond countless kalpas, even more countless, immeasurable, inconceivable, unfathomable, limitless, and utterly beyond, at that time, in that era, in a kalpa called "Great Form," in a world called "Emergence," the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the knower of the world, the tamer of beings, the unsurpassed one, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who subdues with great supernormal knowledge, named Manifest Knowledge, appeared in the world. Monks, how long has it been since that Tathagata appeared? Monks, it is like this: for example, a person grinds all the earth element of this three-thousand-great-thousand world system into powder. Then, that person takes a particle of the finest dust from that world system and, passing through countless world systems to the east, places a particle of the finest dust there. Then, again, that person takes a particle of the finest dust and, beyond that, even further beyond, passing through countless world systems, places a particle of the finest dust. In this way, that person places all the earth element to the east. Monks, what do you think? Can the end and boundary of those world systems be understood by counting? They replied: Bhagavan, it is not possible. Sugata, it is not possible. The Bhagavan said: Monks, those world systems where the finest dust has been placed and where it has not been placed can be counted and understood by a calculator or a great calculator. However, Bhagavan, how many hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas have passed since that Tathagata, who subdues with great supernormal knowledge, completely passed into nirvana? Those kalpas cannot be understood to their end by counting. Monks, it is inconceivable how long it has been since that Tathagata completely passed into nirvana.

Thus immeasurable, I, with the power of seeing the Tathagata's wisdom, remember it as if it were yesterday or today that he completely passed into nirvana. Then, the Blessed One at that time spoke these verses: Recalling the many past kalpas, At that time, the Great Sage was the best of the two-legged, Overpowering with great clairvoyance and wisdom, The Victorious One, the Holy One, will appear in the world. Thus, this three-thousandfold world realm, Some have made the dust of minute particles into dust, Then, taking one minute particle, Passing through a thousand fields and placing it, Likewise, placing two and three, Thus placing all that has become dust, This world realm becomes empty, And all those minute particles are exhausted, In those world realms that exist, Those immeasurable dust particles, All of them, by whom are they turned into dust, Passing through hundreds of kalpas as a mark, Thus, after the Sugata's nirvana, Countless immeasurable kalpas, All minute particles are not enough as a mark, So many kalpas have been exhausted. The Guide's nirvana has lasted that long, Those Shravakas and Bodhisattvas are also, Like that, with the Tathagata's wisdom, All remembrance is like yesterday and today. Whatever monks possess infinite wisdom, The Tathagata's wisdom is like this. With subtle and undefiled mindfulness, Through many kalpas, I have become enlightened. Monks, thus the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, overpowering with great clairvoyance and wisdom, the measure of his life is fifty-four trillion billion hundred thousand kotis of kalpas. Before the Blessed One attained the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, he first went to the supreme essence of enlightenment, completely destroying and defeating all the hosts of demons. Having completely destroyed and defeated them, thinking, 'I shall attain the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment,' but until that time, those dharmas did not manifest before him. He spent an intermediate kalpa at the Bodhi seat under the Bodhi tree.

And stayed. Even if he stayed for two intermediate kalpas, he did not manifest complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment until then. Also for three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten intermediate kalpas, he sat in the vajra posture at the bodhi seat under the bodhi tree, without getting up, his mind unmoving, his body unmoving, and staying unchanged, but even then, those dharmas did not manifest to him. Monks, the gods of the Thirty-Three thought: Where does the Blessed One, who has gone to the supreme and sacred bodhi seat, reside? Then they prepared a great lion throne five hundred yojanas high, so that the Blessed One could sit on the bodhi seat. As soon as the Blessed One sat on the bodhi seat, from then on, the sons of the Brahma heavens rained down flowers within ten yojanas around the bodhi seat. The wind rose from the sky and scattered all the withered flowers. Thus, the rain of flowers was poured down, When the Blessed One was sitting on the bodhi seat, the rain of flowers was poured down continuously. The Blessed One was rained upon for the full ten intermediate kalpas. Thus, the rain of flowers was poured down until the time when the Blessed One completely entered nirvana, and it was scattered on the Blessed One. The sons of the Four Great Kings also beat the drums of the gods of the heavenly realm to honor the Blessed One who was sitting on the supreme and sacred bodhi seat, and they beat them continuously for ten intermediate kalpas. Thereafter, until the time when the Blessed One completely entered great nirvana, the musical instruments of the gods played continuously. Monks, after ten intermediate kalpas had passed, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Completely Perfect Buddha, with the great wisdom of manifest knowledge, overcame and manifested complete perfect enlightenment into unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment. As soon as he manifested complete perfect enlightenment, the Blessed One was like a youth.
