Having started from this perfect Bodhi, all the teachings will truly enter into the vehicle of the Bodhisattva, haven't I shown you that already? Shariputra, however, in order to explain that meaning in more detail, I will show you an analogy. Why is that? Because some wise people understand the meaning of what is said through analogies. Shariputra, for example, in some village, city, town, region, or countryside, or around some king's palace, there lives an old, frail, aged householder who is wealthy, has great possessions, and enjoys great abundance. His house is tall and spacious, built long ago and dilapidated, a single-doored dwelling that can accommodate one hundred, two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, or five hundred animals. The thatched eaves are also dilapidated, the roots of the pillars are rotten, and the walls and door frames are damaged. Suddenly, a great mass of fire blazes up in that house, completely burning all surfaces. That man also has five, ten, twenty, or more children. That man has come out of the house. Shariputra, then that man, seeing that a great mass of fire is blazing up all around his house, becomes frightened and unhappy, thinking: I have not been touched or burned by this great mass of fire, and I can safely and quickly go out through the door of this burning house, but these young children of mine are playing and enjoying themselves in this burning house, happily indulging, not feeling, not knowing, not understanding, not realizing that this house is burning, and thus being deeply tormented by the great mass of fire, even when touched by the great heap of suffering, they are not unhappy, nor do they take it to heart as suffering, nor do they generate the thought of wanting to go out. Shariputra, that man is also strong and has great strength in his hands, and he thinks: Since I am strong and have strength in my hands, I will gather all these children together, take them in my arms, and carry them out of this house. As he thinks this, he also thinks: This house has only one door, and that door is also narrow.

Those young children, being playful and frolicsome due to their youth, might be drawn in and tormented unreasonably by this great fire. Thinking thus, he considered scaring them away. So he said to those children: 'A great fire is burning in this house, and everything here will be burned by this great fire, and you will be tormented unreasonably. Children, come here! Come out!' Thus, that person who wanted to help them advised them in this way. Those children, not knowing what it meant for the fire to be burning like this, were neither unhappy nor afraid, feeling no fear, and thinking that they could not come out, because they did not understand or know, so they wandered around there, running back and forth, looking at their father. Why? Because they were so young and ignorant. Then that person thought again: 'A great fire is burning in this house, and here I and these children will be tormented unreasonably by this great fire. I should use skillful means to get these children out of this house.' That person understood the thoughts of those children and knew their preferences. Those children had many things they liked, and there were many different kinds of things. For things that made them happy, there were various kinds of desires, beauty, ugliness, and pleasantness, but those things were also hard to get. Then that person, understanding the thoughts of those children, said these words: 'Children, those things that you play with that make you happy, wonderful, rare, and unhappy because you cannot get them, those things of various colors and various kinds are like this: bullock carts, goat carts, and deer carts, what do you think? In order for you to play with those beautiful, ugly, and pleasant things, I have placed them outside the door of the house, come out of this house and run over here! I will give each of you whatever you want. They will run out quickly!' Having said this, those children, desiring, beautiful, ugly,

and the names of all kinds of desirable and pleasing things, upon hearing them, they exerted themselves quickly from that burning house for the sake of play and joy. Relying on their great strength, one after another, without stopping, they rushed forward, vying to be first, body after body, and quickly emerged from the burning house. Then, that man, seeing that the children had come out safely and well, realized that they were free from fear, and sat openly and unreservedly in the open space of the village, feeling joy and delight, without sorrow, free from obscurations, having attained fearlessness. Then, the children ran to where their father was, and said this: Father, please grant us those many kinds of games that bring joy, such as ox carts, goat carts, and deer carts. Shariputra, then that man gave his children ox carts that were as swift as the wind and possessed great power, made of the seven precious materials, with side panels, exquisitely crafted with nets of bells and chimes, tall and sturdy, adorned with wondrous and extraordinary jewels, decorated with chains of jewels, adorned with garlands of flowers, with cotton cushions spread out, covered with silk and satin, with two red backrests placed, accompanied by extremely swift white and gray oxen, with banners, held by many people, the oxen strong and powerful, swift as the wind, with harmonious colors, various kinds of ox carts, each child received one. Shariputra, what is the reason for this? Because that man was very wealthy, possessing great riches and many treasures, he thought to himself: If I give these children bad vehicles, what might they do to me? What is the reason for this? Because all these young ones are my own children, all of them love me and please me, and since I also have such good large vehicles, I should treat all these young ones equally, and not treat them unequally. Also, because I possess many treasures, I should treat sentient beings
