They abide very deeply. Then, the youth Manjushri spoke to the Bodhisattva Maitreya, the great being, and the assembly of Bodhisattvas who possessed all things: "Noble sons, this is the Tathagata's intention to make an introductory speech proclaiming the great Dharma. Noble sons, this is the Tathagata's intention to manifestly send down the great rain of Dharma, to thoroughly beat the great drum of Dharma, to thoroughly raise the great banner of Dharma, to thoroughly ignite the great lamp of Dharma, to thoroughly blow the great conch of Dharma, to thoroughly beat the great drum of Dharma, and to make a great teaching of the Dharma. Noble sons, how can I recall, and how have I seen such a sign of the former Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas? Those former Tathagatas also emitted this light. I think that the Tathagata also wishes to make an introductory speech proclaiming the great Dharma, and wishes to hear the proclamation of the great Dharma, so he made such a sign. Why is that? Because the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha wishes to proclaim the categories of Dharma that are not shared by all the worlds, so he shows such a sign, a great miracle, a vision of radiating light. Noble sons, I remember that in the past, beyond countless eons, even more countless, vast, immeasurable, inconceivable, incalculable, and limitless, even beyond that, at that time, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, the unsurpassed, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Sun Moon Lamp, appeared in the world. He taught the Dharma with pure conduct, good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, good in meaning, good in words, unmixed, complete, pure, and immaculate, thus rightly teaching, thus seeing.

For the Shravakas, it is to completely avoid birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and confusion, and to teach the Dharma that leads to Nirvana as the ultimate goal, endowed with the Four Noble Truths, and entering into dependent origination. For the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, it is from the beginning of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, to teach the Dharma that is endowed with the Six Paramitas and has the omniscience of wisdom as its ultimate goal. Sons of the lineage, the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha Sun-Moon Lamp, beyond that, and even further beyond, again, a Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha named Sun-Moon Lamp appeared in the world. In this way, with the method of describing earlier and earlier, the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha Sun-Moon Lamp, with the same name, the same lineage and ancestry, just like this, twenty thousand Tathagatas appeared, in accordance with the Bharadvaja lineage. Mapampa, for those twenty thousand Tathagatas, from the first Tathagata to the last Tathagata, the Dharma they taught was also: pure conduct, good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with good meaning, good words, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, completely purified, and truly taught. Just like this, for the Shravakas, it is to completely avoid birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and confusion. With Nirvana as the ultimate goal, endowed with the Four Noble Truths, entering into dependent origination. For the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, it is from the beginning of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, to teach the Dharma that is endowed with the Six Paramitas and has the omniscience of wisdom as its ultimate goal. Mapampa, like this, the Bhagavan Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha Sun-Moon Lamp, when he was young and living in the palace before renouncing the world,

At that time, there were eight princes, namely: the one named Youthful Intelligence, Good Intelligence, Boundless Intelligence, Jewel Intelligence, Excellent Intelligence, Cutter of All Doubts, Melodious Intelligence, and the prince named Youthful Dharma Intelligence. Mapama, those eight princes, sons of the Blessed One Sun Moon Lamp, possessed great miraculous powers. Each of them enjoyed the four great continents and reigned there as kings. When they learned that the Blessed One had renounced his kingdom, attained unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and become a Buddha, they abandoned all royal enjoyments and followed the Blessed One into ordination. All of them attained unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and became teachers of the Dharma. Those princes always practiced celibacy and planted roots of virtue before many hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. Mapama, at that time, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Sun Moon Lamp, taught a Dharma category called "The Great Definitive Teaching," a very extensive sutra, a teaching for bodhisattvas embraced by all Buddhas. At that time, in that very instant, moment, and brief period, in that assembled retinue, on that great Dharma seat, he sat in the lotus posture and entered into the samadhi called "The Abode of Boundless Definitive Teaching," remaining with his body unmoving and his mind unmoving. As soon as the Blessed One entered into samadhi, a great rain of mandārava flowers, great mandārava flowers, mañjūṣaka flowers, great mañjūṣaka flowers, and divine flowers fell upon the Blessed One and his retinue. The Buddha-field, endowed with all things, also shook in six ways: it quaked, it shook all over; it trembled, it shook all over; it stirred, it stirred all over. Mapama, at that time, in that retinue, there were monks, nuns, and lay followers.
