If one is not even inclined to listen, how could one allow others to listen in order to truly uphold the Dharma? Such things will happen. Those childish ordinary people who lack learning, if they see the treasury of the Dharma being burned by fire, they will be negligent in extinguishing the fire. Ananda, what do you think? In this way, will the Dharma not completely decline? Some Arhats, monks who have exhausted their defilements, they realize the unconditioned Dharma, but they abandon teaching and expounding the Dharma. They will also not honor the teacher, and my true Dharma will not be fully upheld. If this supreme treasury of the Dharma is not proclaimed and taught to be read, it will decline. They reported: World Honored One, it is so. Sugata, it is so. Ananda, in order that some wise people here may understand the meaning of what is said by example, and in order that this meaning may be fully perfected, I will show you an example. Ananda, for example, a person holding a grass lamp in the darkness of the night, returns to his own home. There, many people who want to be freed from the darkness gather together. That person, having been freed from the darkness by the grass lamp, enters his own home and extinguishes the lamp, not giving it to anyone. Ananda, what do you think? When the lamp is still lit, many people who want to be freed from the darkness gather there, but he does not give the grass lamp to anyone. Ananda, is that person doing good by doing that? They reported: World Honored One, no. Sugata, no. The Buddha said: Ananda, similarly, if an Arhat, a monk who has exhausted his defilements, realizes the unconditioned Dharma, but does not proclaim and expound this treasury of the Dharma, which has been accumulated over countless eons, nor widely proclaim it to others, Ananda, such a person has not honored the teacher, nor has he fully upheld my true Dharma. Ananda, therefore, regarding the treasury of the Dharma, which has been accumulated over countless eons,

Entrust this supreme treasure to you, ensure that it never ceases, and extensively reveal this path of virtue to others, so that it constantly arises. Do not become a last person! End of the sixth fascicle. Ananda, whether it is a bhikshu, bhikshuni, upasaka, or upasika, if someone upholds these teachings, and also explains and reveals them to others, Ananda, to that person, I will give a share and leave a portion from this treasure of the Dharma that I have accumulated over countless kalpas. Ananda, therefore, for the benefit of those future sentient beings, I entrust this Bodhi, which has been accumulated over countless kalpas, to you again. May those sentient beings not be completely ruined by not hearing such a treasure of the Dharma. Ananda, many sentient beings will be completely ruined by not hearing such a treasure of the Dharma. Ananda, relying on the power of this matter, I entrust this Buddha's Bodhi, which has been accumulated over countless kalpas, to you, so that those sentient beings will not completely lose such a treasure of the Dharma. Ananda, some wise people will understand the meaning of the example spoken here, therefore, I will show you an example. Ananda, it is like this, for example, a Kshatriya king has an only son who has been empowered from the crown of his head, and he has gone to a foreign land. After he has gone to a foreign land, that Kshatriya king becomes old and frail, and he entrusts many treasure troves to the hands of those who are skilled in treasures, and instructs them: 'Householders, when my son returns from a foreign land and is enthroned as king again, you should tell him that these treasure troves were left for you by your father at the time of his death.' And you should give these treasure troves to him. After the king had instructed them so earnestly, he passed away. After he passed away, the king's son returned from a foreign land and was enthroned as king again, and redeemed with gold the king's son's throne that had been placed separately in the hands of those householders.

If one obtains wealth and abides in kingship, but is not given a treasury of jewels, Ananda, what do you think of that? Is it transformed by gold? Or do those householders do wrong to that king? He replied: Blessed One, it is so. Sugata, it is so. The Buddha said: Ananda, in order to understand the meaning, what is the meaning of looking at the example I have shown you? Ananda, the so-called king, the royal lineage empowered from the crown of the head, is the exclusive term for the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, the Great Dharma King. Ananda, the so-called only son is the exclusive term for the sons and daughters of future lineages who have faith. Ananda, the so-called gone astray is the exclusive term for the five types of beings. Ananda, the so-called sick person is the exclusive term for the complete Nirvana of the Tathagata. Ananda, the so-called many treasures of jewels is the exclusive term for the thirty-seven dharmas of enlightenment. Ananda, the so-called householder is the exclusive term for the Arhats. Ananda, just as a king places wealth when he is about to die. Ananda, I entrust to you my Dharma treasure, which has been accumulated for countless eons, for the sake of the sons and daughters of future lineages. Why is that? Ananda, those sentient beings whom I have completely matured, they are born in hell, as animals, and in the realm of Yama due to some paths of unwholesome deeds. After I have passed away, they will die from there and be reborn as humans, and the cause of the senses being complete and the cause of being fully matured will cause them to have faith in this teaching of mine. Some of them will renounce their homes and go forth from home to homelessness because of faith. Some will remain in their homes. Some of them will attain the fruit of stream-entry. Some will attain the fruit of once-returning, some will attain the fruit of non-returning, and some will manifest the state of Arhat. Some are learners
