Behold, Ananda, those people in the markets and streets who follow the Tathagata as he walks, and after the Tathagata has passed away, they return to their respective places. Behold, Ananda, the past Buddhas, Bhagavat, Pratyekabuddhas, Arhats, Bodhisattvas, lovely spiritual friends, ascetics, and elderly Brahmins are always revered, bowed to, and prostrated to, this is the result of good conduct. Behold, Ananda, even external inanimate objects bow and prostrate to the Tathagata, rise up, and those things that should be lowered or raised, as soon as they see the Tathagata, they lower and rise up, this is the distinction of good conduct. Some foolish people are overcome by the power of pride, deceived by pride, and their minds are completely tormented by pride, so they do not bow to anyone. Behold, Ananda, all the webbed fingers and toes of the Tathagata are the result of good conduct. Behold, Ananda, I have previously gathered beings through generosity, sweet words, beneficial actions, and actions in accordance with the Dharma, behold, those are the results of past good conduct. Behold, Ananda, when I was previously practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I did not think, "This is not my mother, this is not my father, this is not my brother, this is not my sister, this is not my relative, this is not my friend, this is not my enemy." I did not think like that. Behold, Ananda, I have the same mind towards all beings, my mind is equal, there is no inequality, and my mind has become like that. Behold, Ananda, in this long time, if I had not gathered beings through generosity, sweet words, beneficial actions, and actions in accordance with the Dharma, then it would not be easy to find them, and ordinary people do not know how to gather them. Just as the beginning of samsara is invisible, ordinary people experience happiness. Behold, Ananda, all ordinary people experience happiness because of the merit they have accumulated, therefore (what I have done) is more meaningful than gathering a single being.

There are very many things that bring happiness and accomplish things. I have only brought happiness to sentient beings and accomplished things, but those sentient beings have not experienced happiness because they themselves have accumulated merit. Kungawo, however, all those things that bring happiness are impermanent, they are subject to change. When I previously practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, all those things that brought happiness to children and other beings, all those things that brought happiness, were completely matured in order to establish this path. Now, with what kind of happiness do I make you happy? It is unconditioned happiness, the happiness of the noble ones, free from outflows. Those happinesses will never completely change at any time, nor will they be exhausted. Kungawo, therefore, act with the wisdom of the noble ones! Kungawo, act with the deeds of wisdom! I have already done it. Kungawo, I have already spoken of other practices, even the ripening of the roots of virtue from generating a single thought of faith. Kungawo, there are also sentient beings who have done roots of virtue, generated roots of virtue, and generated the seeds of Nirvana. Kungawo, there are also some sentient beings who, after perfectly recollecting the Tathagata, shed tears merely from joy or merely from faith upon hearing that I have been exhausted and completely decayed in this way. Kungawo, there are also sentient beings who, after recollecting the Tathagata, emit long sighs. There are also those who bristle their hair. Those sentient beings will not go to the hells, the animal realm, or the world of Yama, and they will definitely incline towards perfect and complete enlightenment. Kungawo, similarly, whoever remembers me and sheds tears by the power of the Dharma, or bristles their hair, or emits long sighs, all those sentient beings, Kungawo, will not go to the animal realm or the world of Yama, nor will they go to all the evil destinies. Kungawo, therefore, strive diligently in mindfulness! Kungawo, the enlightenment of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is attained through mindfulness, and apart from that, all the virtuous qualities of the aspects of enlightenment are also through mindfulness.

It is obtained. Ananda, whatever a teacher does, whatever he desires for benefit, whatever he desires for benefit and happiness, whatever he delights in for benefit, and whatever a compassionate and loving person does out of love, I have done. Now, by all means, ensure that the path of virtue is not interrupted and that the principles of the sacred Dharma do not disappear. Ananda, by all means, ensure that these principles of the sacred Dharma endure for a long time and that they become vast and extensive for gods and humans. Ananda, in order to ensure that this treasure of the Dharma Jewel is in no way destroyed, I entrust it to you. This is what I have taught. This is what I have taught. The twelfth chapter, entitled "Complete Entrustment of the Sacred Dharma," is complete. Twelfth: The chapter entitled "Complete Entrustment of the Sacred Dharma."
