Those who possess the Dharma will be completely liberated from birth. Sentient beings who possess the nature of sickness, the nature of death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil will be completely liberated from turmoil. Ananda, having seen this root of meaning, I say that both those who respectfully teach the Dharma and those who respectfully listen to the Dharma generate much merit. Having spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, one who enters with superior intention and wishes to practice correctly, having unhesitatingly believed and rejoiced in the teachings of the Buddha, the Blessed One, and believing that the Dharma has been well spoken, the Sangha has entered well, and that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, are suffering, are peaceful, are empty, are without self, Ananda, this generates much more merit than mere words. Ananda, whoever acts like a tree, attends to it, thinks with all their mind, and listens to the Dharma, and having listened, even to the extent of the sound of a finger snap, truly knows that it is impermanent, is suffering, is empty, is without self, Ananda, in those boundless and limitless world realms, all sentient beings in the realm of sentient beings are exceedingly numerous. Not the earth realm, not the water realm, not the fire realm, not the wind realm. Having completely examined and grasped all those deeds done in this way, in a moment, an instant, a short time, without precedence, they are transformed into human beings, and in a moment, an instant, a short time, they awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become Buddhas. And a householder also appears. Those Tathagata, Blessed Ones, dwell for a long time until the beginning of cyclic existence is invisible, and that householder also remains in that eon. He serves, reveres, attends, and makes offerings to those Tathagata, Blessed Ones, with all things such as clothing, food, bedding, medicine for the sick, provisions, and means of comfort, and completely

On the ground, making stupas from the seven precious materials for those who have passed away, with divine umbrellas, victory banners, flags, flowers, garlands, incense, and all kinds of perfumes, and with all possessions, one serves with respect, makes them one's teachers, makes offerings, and makes sacrifices. Ananda, what do you think? Does that householder generate more merit from that basis? He replied: Blessed One, even if that householder pleases, serves with respect, makes his teacher, makes offerings, and makes sacrifices to one Tathagata, he would generate more merit from that basis. There is immeasurable merit. There is no number. It is inconceivable. There is no comparison. It will generate immeasurable merit. What need is there to mention serving with respect, making one's teacher, making offerings, and making sacrifices to such a gathering of Tathagatas for so many eons? After he said that, the Blessed One spoke these words to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, it is just so. Just as you say, he generates immeasurable merit. Ananda, therefore, I exhort you. You should understand. Whatever merit that householder generates by serving with respect, making his teacher, and making offerings to so many Tathagatas with all the implements of happiness for so many eons, compared to that, whoever makes himself like an arrow shaft, keeps it in mind, thinks with all his mind, and listens to the Dharma with single-pointed attention, even if he only rings a bell, thinking that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, suffering, peaceful, empty, or selfless, if he keeps this in mind, this generates much more merit than that. Ananda, whoever respectfully teaches the Dharma and whoever respectfully listens to the Dharma generates much more merit. Ananda, considering this, I said this: For the sake of two purposes, one should listen to the Buddha's teachings. The outflows will also come to an end. One desires to be close to enlightenment. Whoever teaches the Dharma and whoever holds the banner of the righteous, both will become endowed with merit. The Dharma is said to be the banner of the righteous. Then the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda:
