Please give him these valuables. After giving them, instruct the young man thus: 'Your father, at the time of his death, left these many valuables to me for your sake. This collection of your father's wealth is for my enjoyment. Take it and guard it carefully, and by all means, do not waste it.' After saying this, that merchant or householder took the many stores of valuables that had been left by another merchant. If he did not give that store of valuables to the merchant's son who had come from afar, what do you think, Ananda? Who would be at fault in that? After saying this, the Blessed One, the venerable Ananda replied thus: 'Blessed One, since that merchant took the many valuables that had been left and did not give them to the merchant's son, the householder who holds the deposit would be at fault.' The Buddha said: 'Ananda, in order to understand that meaning, what is the meaningful view in the example I have given? Ananda, the term 'householder' is a synonym for the Thus-Gone One. Ananda, the term 'at the time of death' is a synonym for the realm of the Thus-Gone One's complete passing into nirvana. Ananda, the term 'only son' is a synonym for the sons or daughters of good family in the future who have faith. Ananda, the term 'gone abroad' is a synonym for being born in the cycle of the five destinies. Ananda, the term 'great store of jewels' is a synonym for this Dharma Jewel, which has been accumulated over countless eons. Ananda, the term 'holding the deposit' is a synonym for the great hearers and Bodhisattva great beings like you who protect this city of the sacred Dharma. Ananda, in this way, this great store of the Dharma Jewel, which has been accumulated over countless eons, for the sake of the sons or daughters of good family in the future, I entrust to you, the great Kashyapa, and the Bodhisattva Maitreya and others. In the future, my sons who have faith and are delighted, by all means, should conform to and teach this store of the sacred Dharma Jewel.

Give! Why is that? Venerable Ananda, when I was a Bodhisattva in the past, there were sentient beings who had been fully ripened. Those sentient beings are now doing evil deeds and behaving badly, falling into the realm of sentient beings, or the birthplace of animals, or the world of Yama. After the Tathagata passes away, those beings will die and be reborn as humans. Because their faculties have grown and are fully matured, they will have faith in my teachings with little effort. Some of them will renounce their homes and become homeless. Some will remain at home. After hearing such sutras as mine, those beings will become extraordinary. Those beings will be completely liberated from suffering through the Hearer Vehicle, or the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, or the Great Vehicle. Venerable Ananda, for the sake of the sons of good family to hear this treasury of the sacred Dharma, which has been accumulated for countless eons, achieved through hundreds of millions of billions of eons, I entrust it to your hands for the benefit of those beings. Why is that? Venerable Ananda, because such sentient beings, not having heard such a path of virtue, will completely decline. Venerable Ananda, therefore, in any case, in order to prevent those beings from declining from hearing such teachings, I entrust the future to you. Venerable Ananda, here, some wise people will understand the meaning of the example. Therefore, in order to understand this meaning extensively, I will show you an example. Venerable Ananda, for example, a Wheel-Turning King entrusts all treasures and wealth to the treasurers and ministers, and commands them: 'Hey, people, you should give to those ascetics, Brahmins, poor people, beggars, destitute people, those who beg for food, food, those who beg for drink, drink, as well as vehicles, clothes, flowers, incense, garlands, ointments, bedding, dwellings, support, and whatever necessities of life.' However, if those treasurers and ministers open the treasures and storehouses, but do not give alms, Venerable Ananda, who do you think should be blamed for that? Replied: Venerable, it is those treasurers and ministers.
