And, because clinging has not completely grasped, therefore all things are neither things nor non-things. Like this, if one understands that one's own mind is merely an appearance, then conceptualization will not arise, and being extremely blissful, worldly affairs will be completely pacified. Foolish ordinary people conceptualize that things exist, but the noble ones do not. Unreal conceptualizations are like Gandharva cities, illusions, and emanated beings. Great wisdom, for example, in a Gandharva city, many and various guides of illusions and emanated beings appear and enter. Foolish and ignorant people, through conceptualization, believe that these truly occur, saying "appear" and "enter," but in reality, there is no such thing as "appearing" or "entering," because it is merely conceptualization. Similarly, great wisdom causes foolish ordinary people to generate the illusion of no birth and no death, but for them, there is neither conditioned nor unconditioned phenomena. Like an illusory person, although appearing to be born, in reality, there is no birth or death for him, because neither things nor non-things exist. All dharmas are also like that; if birth and death are abandoned, then foolish ordinary people, because they fall into unreality, will generate conceptualizations of birth and death, but the noble ones will not. The so-called unreality is that when examining the nature of things, it is neither like that nor other. If examined as other, then attachment to the nature of all things will arise, and complete quiescence will not be seen. If complete quiescence is not seen, one will not be free from conceptualization. Therefore, great wisdom does not see the supreme through signs, but not through signs, because seeing through signs is the cause of taking rebirth, so it is not supreme. Great wisdom, without signs, does not generate conceptualization, because it does not arise and does not cease, so I say this is Nirvana. Great wisdom, for him, Nirvana is as it is in reality.

Having abandoned the mind and mental phenomena that were previously conceptualized through seeing, the Tathagata has shown that he has attained nirvana through the exalted wisdom of individual self-awareness. Then, in order to further explain that meaning, the Blessed One spoke these verses: In order to reverse the assertion of birth, the meaning of non-birth is established. The Dharma that I have taught in this way cannot be understood by children. Because all dharmas are unborn, there is no entity and no birth. Like a dream, an illusion, a city of gandharvas, although there are entities, there is no cause. Unborn, without self-nature, why should emptiness also be explained? Completely abandoning the aggregates, if one knows with intelligence, entities do not appear. Therefore, I have said that emptiness is unborn, without self-nature. In this way, by assembling one by one, although entities appear, they do not exist. If analyzed, there is no assembly, and it is not like the views of the tirthikas. Like a dream, an illusion, a hair ornament, like a mirage, a city of gandharvas, all kinds of worldly entities appear with various characteristics without cause. In order to subdue those who say there is a cause, the meaning of non-birth is fully proclaimed. Because non-birth is fully proclaimed, the nature of the Dharma is not interrupted. Those who strongly assert no cause are fearful tirthikas. How, for what reason, and why would it arise? If assembled in what, then it is said to be without cause. If conditioned dharmas are well examined, they are neither without cause nor with cause. From then on, the views that speak of birth and destruction will cease. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahamati asked in verses: For what reason is there no birth? Or is there no entity? Or is it dependent on conditions? Or is there Dharma but no birth? It is not reasonable for a name to have no meaning. Please explain and differentiate. Then, the Blessed One answered in verses: It is not that there is no entity and therefore no birth, nor is it dependent on conditions. It is not that there is a name because there is an entity, nor is the name without meaning. All tirthikas, as well as shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, are not the objects of the seventh bhumi, that is the characteristic of non-birth.
