Therefore, meat should not be eaten. When living in the forests of monasteries, meat should not be eaten to avoid attracting the scent of tigers, wolves, and the like. Meat should not be eaten to avoid losing control over food. Meat should not be eaten to prevent yogis from developing feelings of aversion. I have said that one should always regard whatever is eaten and drunk as having the perception of the flesh of one's own child and the perception of medicine; therefore, meat should not be eaten. If someone says that I have permitted the eating of meat, that is unfounded. Furthermore, Mahamati, in the past there was a king named Lion Good Citizen who ate all kinds of meat, even human flesh, and as a result, his ministers, relatives, and kinsmen turned against him, and he lost his former power and became miserable. Therefore, since there are such faults in eating meat, it should not be eaten. Furthermore, Mahamati, those who kill living beings do so for profit, killing and selling them. Those foolish meat-eaters buy meat with money. Those who kill living beings, desiring profit, kill beings that move in the sky, live in the water, and walk on the earth in various ways with hooks and nets, seeking profit. Mahamati, there is no such thing as meat that is not permitted, not sought after, or without consciousness; therefore, meat should not be eaten. Mahamati, I previously prohibited five and ten kinds of meat, but in this sutra, I prohibit all kinds and at all times, and all expedient means as well. Mahamati, for the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, there is nothing to be eaten, let alone eating fish meat. Nor is it permitted for others to eat. Because great compassion goes before, seeing all sentient beings as if they were one's only child, therefore the flesh of one's child is not permitted to be eaten. Then, the Bhagavan, in order to further explain this meaning, spoke these verses: Because in the past they were relatives and friends, because they are mixed with evil and impurity, because they are produced from semen and blood, because all the smells are frightening.

Meat and onions, garlic and children, etc., and all kinds of intoxicating liquor, the yogi should always abandon. Grains and butter should also be abandoned, and beds with holes should also be abandoned, because there are extremely terrifying subtle beings there. From food arises carelessness, from carelessness arises discrimination, from discrimination arises desire, therefore do not eat. Desire arises from the power of food, desire makes the mind dull, dullness generates the desire for existence, and one cannot be liberated from samsara. For the sake of profit, beings are killed, and for the sake of meat, wealth is given in charity, both are doers of evil deeds, and after death, they will fall into the wailing hell. If there is no awareness of being entrusted or sought, then there is no meat that is pure in three ways. Because there is no result without a cause, therefore do not eat. Because of these, the yogi should abandon everything. All the Buddhas, Bhagavad-s of the ten directions, will severely condemn. They eat each other, and after death, they will fall into the category of wild beasts. They will be born in places with foul smells, condemned, and foolish. Mostly they will be born in the Chandala caste, the hunter and butcher caste, or they will be born in the outcaste caste, they will be born in the meat-eating caste, they will be born in the wombs of rakshasas, cats, etc. The Elephant Treasury Sutra, the Great Cloud Sutra, and the Angulimala Sutra, as well as the Lankavatara Sutra, I have strictly forbidden meat. Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Shravakas all condemn, and eating without shame, one will always be born as a fool. It has also been said before that all meat that is seen, heard, or suspected should be abandoned. Because speculators do not understand, therefore they are born in the place of meat-eaters. Just as the fault of desire obscures the liberation of the noble ones, meat, alcohol, garlic, onions, etc., also obstruct the path of the noble ones. Beings of the future age, eating meat and speaking foolishly, say that meat is not sinful, it is permissible, the Buddha allows us to eat it. Holding the perception of food as medicine, and also like eating the flesh of a son, knowing the Dharma and generating renunciation, the yogi practices begging. Compassion always dwells in the mind.

Pa. I speak with complete weariness. Tigers and wolves, predators, always live and dwell together. If they eat meat, sentient beings will become frightened. Therefore, yogis do not eat meat with a compassionate mind. Meat eaters have no compassion or wisdom, turn their backs on liberation, and contradict the emblems of the noble ones. Therefore, they will be born into wealthy families, into the Brahmin caste. Furthermore, the abode of yogis will be born into a household rich in wisdom. This is due to the power of abandoning meat.
