Thinking of it as nirvana, like this, although the non-Buddhists completely think of it as nirvana with various discriminations, there is neither arising nor ceasing in this (nirvana). Mahamati, the nirvana of each of the non-Buddhists is that which is separately considered by their own teachings and wisdom, therefore there is no establishment whatsoever. Just as their discriminating mind, and wishful thinking, going, and various movements, all of these cannot attain any nirvana. Mahamati, the nirvana that I have taught is like this: being skilled and understanding that one's own mind is merely an appearance, not being attached to external objects, completely abandoning the four extremes, seeing the true existence as it is, therefore not falling into the two extremes of discrimination of one's own mind appearance, the grasper and the grasped are not found, not seeing that all valid cognitions are established, because it is ignorance of suchness, therefore it should not be completely taken, abandoning these, obtaining the Dharma of self-realization of the noble ones, realizing the two selflessnesses, completely abandoning the two afflictions, the two obscurations are completely purified, completely abandoning the two deaths and rebirths, by continuously practicing the higher and higher grounds, entering the Tathagata ground, obtaining deep samadhi such as images and illusions, completely abandoning mind, intellect, and consciousness, this is taught as nirvana. Mahamati, you and other Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should study this, and quickly completely abandon all the non-Buddhist views of nirvana. Then, the Bhagavan spoke these verses in order to further explain that meaning: Non-Buddhists see nirvana, Various discriminations arise separately. Those are born from the discriminations of the mind, There is no means of liberation. Being ignorant of bondage and what is bound, Because of completely abandoning skillful means, The non-Buddhist's thought of liberation, Liberation never arises. Entering through different doors with many knowledges, The way the non-Buddhists see, Those have no liberation.

Because of foolishness and delusion, conceptualization arises. Foolish non-Buddhists see everything as conceptualization and action. Those who speak of existence and non-existence have no liberation. Children are fond of conceptualization and will not hear true wisdom. Speech is the place of three sufferings and the cause of the destruction of true suffering. Just as reflections in a mirror appear but do not exist, on the mirror of the mind of conceptualization, children see duality. Not knowing the mind and the object, dualistic conceptualization arises. If one fully knows the mind and the object, conceptualization will not arise. The mind is of various changes, because it has completely abandoned characteristics and bases. Actions appear but there is no appearance, just as children conceptualize. The three realms are merely conceptualization, so external objects are meaningless. Conceptualization appears in various ways, but children do not understand. Sutras and sutras explain conceptualization, but it never goes beyond names. Apart from speech, there is nothing to be spoken. From the "Precious Sutra of the Descent into Lanka," chapter seven. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati requested the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, please explain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment of the Buddha. Then, I and other Bodhisattva Mahasattvas will be skilled in understanding the nature of the Tathagatagarbha, and I and others will comprehend it." The Blessed One said: "Mahamati, ask as you wish, and I will explain as you have asked." Mahamati requested the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, is the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly and Completely Enlightened One, made or unmade, a thing, a cause, a characteristic, a basis of characteristics, a speech, something to be spoken, a wisdom, something to be known, or such words, and are they different or not different?" The Blessed One said: "Mahamati, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly and Completely Enlightened One is neither a thing of such words nor a cause. Why is that?"
