Therefore, listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Mahamati asked the Blessed One: "So it is, O Blessed One, I will listen to the teachings." The Blessed One said this: "Mahamati, regarding this, the past noble ones have understood and transmitted it from one to another, relying on the teaching that the imagined is without essence. Bodhisattva-mahasattvas, having gone alone to a solitary place, discriminating phenomena with their own wisdom, not relying on others, abandoning views and discriminations, becoming more and more excellent, thoroughly entering the Tathagata ground, this is called the characteristic of the noble wisdom that is individually realized by wisdom. Mahamati, what is the characteristic of the One Vehicle? For example, understanding the path of the One Vehicle, I say is the One Vehicle. What is the understanding of the path of the One Vehicle? For example, regarding the discriminations of the grasped and the grasper, not generating discriminations in that state as it is, this is called understanding the One Vehicle. Mahamati, this understanding of the One Vehicle is not attained by other non-Buddhists, Sravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Brahma, etc., other than the Tathagata. Therefore, it is called the One Vehicle." Mahamati asked the Blessed One: "O Blessed One, why did you teach the Three Vehicles and not speak of the One Vehicle?" The Blessed One said: "Mahamati, because the nature is the Dharma of ultimately not entering Nirvana, therefore the One Vehicle was not taught to all Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Just like that, all Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas attain liberation through the discipline of the Tathagata and the practice of extreme solitude, but not through their own power, therefore the One Vehicle was not taught. Furthermore, Mahamati, because they have not abandoned the obscurations of afflictions and the habitual tendencies of karma, therefore the One Vehicle was not taught to all Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Because they have not realized the selflessness of dharmas and have not abandoned death and rebirth associated with entities, therefore the Three Vehicles were taught. Mahamati, when will those abandon the habitual tendencies of evil?

Having abandoned all attachments and realized the selflessness of all phenomena, they abandon the habitual tendencies that give rise to all the faults of afflictions. Having no entity to experience the bliss of samadhi, they awaken from the realm of non-leakage. Having awakened, they enter the state beyond the world. From higher to higher, they completely accumulate all the accumulations in the realm of non-leakage. They will be able to perfectly attain the inconceivable realm of the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses to explain the meaning again: The vehicle of the gods and Brahma, the vehicle of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and the vehicle of the Tathagatas, those vehicles that I have spoken of, until the minds enter, they are not said to be ultimate. If that mind is exhausted, then there is no vehicle and no support. Because there is no establishment of vehicles, I have taught the one vehicle. In order to guide sentient beings, I have taught various vehicles. There are three kinds of liberation. In the selflessness of phenomena, that is its nature. Afflictions, wisdom, etc., if liberated, become empty. Like wood floating in the ocean, constantly moved by the waves, the ignorance of the Hearers is also like that, moved by the wind of characteristics. Although they return from all arising, they are deluded by other afflictive habitual tendencies. Intoxicated by the bliss of samadhi, they abide in the realm of non-leakage. There is no ultimate way for them. They do not return from it. Having obtained the body of samadhi, they do not awaken for kalpas. Just as a drunken person awakens when the intoxicating substance is exhausted, so too will they realize the Dharma and attain the supreme Buddha body. The fifth chapter of the Holy Lankavatara Sutra. Then, the Blessed One spoke again to the great Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati: Mahamati, please explain the nature of the body born of mind, completely distinguishing and realizing it. Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. The Bodhisattva Mahamati said to the Blessed One: Excellent, Blessed One, we wish to hear it thus. Then the Blessed One began.
