These are they. Among them, the four skandhas are formless, namely feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Mahamati, form is the four great elements, and the nature of incompatibility arising from the elements. Mahamati, the formless cannot be counted as four, like space. For example, space transcends the nature of number, although it is free from counting, it is called space through discrimination. Mahamati, likewise, the skandhas also transcend the nature of number, being free from counting, therefore it is the complete abandonment of things and non-things, free from the four extremes. The nature of number and counting is what children speak of, not what the noble ones speak of. Mahamati, the noble ones closely posit the illusory-like form, various and diverse, completely abandoning one and different. Again, like a person in a dream and an image, because of the complete abandonment of one and different. Mahamati, the way of the wisdom of the noble ones appears through discrimination, just like the skandhas. This is the nature of the skandhas, you should negate it. By negating it, by teaching the Dharma of utter tranquility, in all Buddha-fields, the views of the heretics should be negated. Mahamati, when the Dharma of utter tranquility is taught, seeing the selflessness of phenomena will become completely pure, and one will also enter the immovable ground. Having entered the immovable ground, one will be able to master immeasurable samadhi. Having obtained the mind-made body, one will be able to obtain the illusory-like samadhi. By understanding powers, super-knowledges, and freedoms, one will be able to gather and benefit all beings. Just as the great earth supports and benefits beings, so too the Bodhisattva Mahasattva also benefits all beings. Furthermore, Mahamati, the heretics have four kinds of Nirvana, what are the four? Namely, the nature of things, the Nirvana of non-things, and the things of various characteristics.

Nirvana without substance, and Nirvana that realizes the nature of its own nature as without substance, and Nirvana that severs the continuum of the self and common characteristics of the aggregates. These are the Nirvanas of the non-Buddhists, not in my scriptures. Great Wisdom, in my scriptures, the cessation of consciousness together with discrimination is called Nirvana. Great Wisdom asked: Has the Blessed One not established the eight consciousnesses? The Blessed One said: I have established them. Great Wisdom asked: Blessed One, if you have established them, how is it that the cessation of the consciousness of mind eliminates the seven consciousnesses? The Blessed One said to Great Wisdom: Because their cause and their object are conditions, the seven consciousnesses do not arise. Among them, the consciousness of mind distinguishes objects and is manifestly attached, thus generating habits and increasing the alaya-consciousness. Together with the mind, it is manifestly attached to the self and what is grasped as self, and because it arises from the condition of self-cherishing, the nature of the body is not destroyed. It becomes the cause of the alaya-consciousness, and with that as its object, it is manifestly attached to the object of its own mind's appearance, so one cause of mind arises as one. For example, like the waves of the ocean, moved by the wind of its own appearing field of activity, there is entering and returning, so it is. Thus, when the consciousness of mind ceases, the seven consciousnesses will also cease. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses to further explain that meaning: I do not enter into Nirvana as action, nature, or substance. The cessation of the discriminating knowable consciousnesses is the Nirvana I attain. Because that is the cause and that is the object, the body is manifested through the actions of the mind, etc. The cause that produces is the mind, and the dwelling place of consciousness is well distinguished. Just as when a great river is exhausted, waves no longer arise continuously, so when the mind ceases, various consciousnesses will not arise.

Furthermore, Mahamati, I shall explain the various distinctions of the nature of what is mentally constructed, and the characteristics of the way of understanding. Mahamati, whoever is skilled in the various distinctions of the nature of what is mentally constructed and the characteristics of the way of understanding, you and the other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will abandon all discriminations, abide in the self-realization of each of the noble ones, and abandon the discriminations of the doctrines of the heretics, and the apprehensions of what is grasped by the extremely visible mind, and the discriminations of the grasper, and thus will not conceive the various characteristics of what arises from others as the activities of the nature of what is mentally constructed. So, Mahamati, what are the characteristics of the way of distinguishing the various distinctions of the nature of what is mentally constructed? It is like this: the discrimination of language, the discrimination of what is to be spoken, the discrimination of characteristics, the discrimination of wealth, the discrimination of self-nature, the discrimination of causes, the discrimination of views, the discrimination of reasoning, the discrimination of arising, the discrimination of non-arising, the discrimination of relations, and the discrimination of being bound and not being bound. This is the characteristic of the way of distinguishing the various distinctions of the nature of what is mentally constructed. So, Mahamati, what is the discrimination of language? It is like this: being attached to various pleasant sounds and songs. This is called the discrimination of language. Mahamati, what is the discrimination of what is to be spoken? It is like this: whatever is the nature of the object to be spoken, it should be known by the wisdom of the noble ones, and abiding in that, the form of speech that arises is called the discrimination of what is to be spoken. Mahamati, what is the discrimination of characteristics? It is like this: those very objects to be spoken of, like a mirage, are attached to various characteristics, that is, attached to the characteristics of solidity, moisture, warmth, and motion, and discriminating all things, this is called the discrimination of characteristics. Mahamati, what is the discrimination of wealth? Being attached to gold, silver, and various precious jewels.
