To! In the Sutra Pitaka spoken by the Bhagavan, the Tathagatagarbha is said to be naturally pure, following the thirty-two marks, and existing in the bodies of all sentient beings. For example, just as a precious and valuable jewel is completely wrapped in a dirty cloth, so too, the Tathagatagarbha, which is permanent and unchanging, is similarly completely wrapped in the dirty cloth of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas, and is stained by the dust of desire, hatred, ignorance, and incorrect conceptualization. All Buddhas have proclaimed this. Why did the Bhagavan say that the Tathagatagarbha exists, similar to the "self" spoken of by the Tirthikas? Bhagavan, the Tirthikas also say that there is permanence and an agent, and that it is without qualities, all-pervasive, and fearless. Bhagavan, they speak of the "self" in this way. The Bhagavan said: Great Wisdom, the Tathagatagarbha that I speak of is not the same as the "self" spoken of by the Tirthikas. Great Wisdom, sometimes the Tathagatagarbha is taught with words such as emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, suchness, ultimate reality, dharmata, dharmakaya, nirvana, devoid of self-nature, unborn, unceasing, primordially isolated and peaceful, and naturally in nirvana. The Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, skillfully teach the door of the Tathagatagarbha, which is the realm of non-appearance, free from conceptualization, in order to eliminate the fear of those children who are frightened by the word "non-self." Great Wisdom, Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas who appear in the future and present should not be attached to the view of "self." For example, a potter makes various kinds of vessels from a single lump of clay using human skill, water, lye, a wheel, and the combination of threads. Similarly,

The departed ones are also similarly without self in the Dharma, devoid of all characteristics of discrimination, and through various kinds of wisdom and skillful means, they demonstrate the essence of the Tathagata, or they demonstrate non-self. Because of these causes and conditions, the demonstration of the essence of the Tathagata is different from the self spoken of by the heretics. This is called the demonstration of the essence of the Tathagata. In order to tame the heretics who are attached to the self spoken of by the heretics, the essence of the Tathagata is demonstrated, free from the discrimination of seeing a non-real self, possessing the intention of entering the realm of the three doors of liberation, and in order to quickly attain the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, the Tathagatas, Arhats, and perfectly enlightened Buddhas demonstrate the essence of the Tathagata in this way. If it were not so, they would be the same as the heretics. Therefore, Mahamati, in order to completely abandon the self spoken of by the heretics, one should abide in the non-self of the essence of the Tathagata. Then, the Bhagavan, in order to further explain that meaning, spoke this verse: Persons, permanence, aggregates, conditions, and atoms, as well as the chief, the powerful creator, are merely discriminated upon the mind. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati, observing the future beings, again said to the Bhagavan: O Bhagavan, please explain to me how the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas realize the great expedient of yoga. The Bhagavan replied: Mahamati, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva possesses four qualities, he will attain the great expedient of yoga. What are the four? They are: being skilled in distinguishing the appearances of one's own mind, completely understanding that external objects are not objects, completely abandoning the views of arising, abiding, and ceasing, and individually attaining the abundant bliss of noble wisdom through self-awareness. This is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva.

If one possesses four strengths, it is said to have attained the great expedient of yoga. How then is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva skilled in distinguishing his own appearances? For example, he thinks thus: This triple world is merely a part of the mind, devoid of self and what belongs to self, without movement, without coming and going, completely imbued with the habitual tendencies of elaboration from beginningless time, bound by closely engaging with the various forms of the triple world, appearing to follow after the conceptual thoughts that establish body and enjoyment. Thus, he thoroughly understands. This is what is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva being skilled in distinguishing his own mind's appearances. How then is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva skilled in thoroughly understanding that external objects are without reality? For example, all things are like mirages and dreams, arising from the cause of the habitual tendencies of elaboration, negative karma, and conceptual thoughts from beginningless time. Thus, he thoroughly understands the nature of all things. Bodhisattva Mahasattvas thus understand that external objects are without reality. This is what is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva being skilled in thoroughly understanding that external objects are without reality. How then is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva skilled in completely abandoning the views of arising, abiding, and ceasing? For example, all things are similar to illusions and dreams, and things do not arise from self, other, or both, because they merely follow after the appearances of one's own mind. Therefore, one sees that external objects are without reality, and one sees that the consciousnesses have no entry and that the conditions are not assembled. And one sees that the triple world arises from the conditions of conceptual thought. Therefore, all internal and external phenomena are unobservable, and one sees that they are devoid of inherent existence, thereby abandoning the perverse view of arising. And because one understands the nature of phenomena such as illusions, one thoroughly obtains forbearance of the unarisen dharma, and thus completely abandons the views of arising, abiding, and ceasing. This is
