A prayer. I beseech the Blessed One to explain to me and others the emptiness of all dharmas, their unborn nature, their non-duality, and their nature free from inherent existence. By this, may I and other Bodhisattvas also comprehend emptiness, unborn nature, non-duality, and the nature free from inherent existence, completely abandoning the discriminations of existence and non-existence, and quickly attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati, saying: Mahamati, therefore listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will extensively and thoroughly explain it to you. Mahamati said to the Blessed One: Very well, Blessed One, I will listen attentively. The Blessed One said: Mahamati, this so-called emptiness, emptiness, is the place of the parikalpita-svabhava (imputed nature). Mahamati, for those who are attached to the parikalpita-svabhava, emptiness, unborn nature, non-duality, and the nature free from inherent existence are taught. Mahamati, in short, emptiness is of seven types, namely: emptiness of characteristics, emptiness of the nature of things, emptiness of fabrication, emptiness of non-fabrication, emptiness of all dharmas being free from expression, emptiness of the great noble wisdom of ultimate meaning, and emptiness of one emptiness emptying another emptiness. What is the emptiness of characteristics? For example, all things are empty of their own and general characteristics, because they are distinguished from each other by being assembled together, so by distinguishing that things do not exist, their own and general characteristics do not arise, and because there are no things of self, other, or both, the characteristics do not remain. Therefore, it is said that all things are empty of characteristics, and this is called the emptiness of characteristics. What is the emptiness of the nature of things? For example, because the nature of things of oneself does not arise, therefore.

The nature of all things is emptiness, therefore it is called the emptiness of the nature of things. What is the emptiness of formations? For example, the aggregates are separate from self and what belongs to self, and are produced by causes and conditions, and arise from actions, deeds, and combinations. This is called the emptiness of formations. Great Wisdom, in this way, the emptiness of formations, because it arises from mutual causes and conditions, and there is no object of inherent nature, it is called the emptiness of no formations. What is the emptiness of all dharmas being free from expression? For example, the nature of what is completely imputed is inexpressible, therefore all dharmas are free from expression. This is called the emptiness of all dharmas being free from expression. What is the great emptiness of the ultimate noble wisdom of all dharmas? For example, obtaining noble wisdom through individual awareness is empty of the imprints of all views and faults. This is called the great emptiness of the ultimate noble wisdom of all dharmas. What is the emptiness of one by one? For example, being empty because something is absent, this is called the emptiness of one by one. Great Wisdom, for example, in the house of मृगला (mṛgalā), there are no elephants, horses, cows, sheep, etc., but it is not that there is no sangha of monks. Saying that it is empty of those, but the house is not empty of the things of the house, the monks are not empty of the things of the monks, and it is not that there are no elephants and horses, etc. in other places. That is the individual characteristic of all dharmas, that which is absent in something, that is called the emptiness of one by one. These are the seven types of emptiness, and the emptiness of one by one is the inferior one among the emptinesses, and you should completely abandon it. Great Wisdom, self is neither born nor unborn, except for abiding in samadhi, no birth is called unborn. That which is called devoid of nature, that unborn is called devoid of nature. The discontinuity of the momentary continuum, and the appearance of different things, all things self

Devoid of inherent nature, therefore all things are called devoid of inherent nature. What is non-duality? For example, all dharmas are like shadows, heat, long, short, black, and white. Mahamati, all dharmas are non-dual, not different from nirvana, and samsara is not different from nirvana either. Because of the cause of different characteristics, things exist, and are called non-dual. Just as nirvana and samsara are, so are all dharmas. Therefore, one should diligently practice the characteristics of emptiness, non-origination, non-duality, and being devoid of inherent nature. Then, the Bhagavan, in order to further explain that meaning, spoke these verses: I always speak of the Dharma of emptiness, completely abandoning permanence and annihilation, although I explain samsara as being like illusions and dreams, karma will not be destroyed. Space, nirvana, and cessation are also like this. Children discriminate, while noble ones abandon existence and non-existence. Then, the Bhagavan spoke to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati: Mahamati, the characteristics of emptiness, non-origination, non-duality, and being devoid of inherent nature are contained within all the sutras of the Buddhas, and these meanings are taught in every sutra. The sutras are differentiated according to the thoughts of sentient beings, and in order to thoroughly reveal the meaning, suchness is not found in words. For example, a thirsty deer, due to its discrimination, mistakes a mirage for a deer, deceiving the deer, and clings to its nature as if it were a real object of water, but there is no water there. Similarly, the teaching of dharmas in all the sutras is also for the purpose of generating great joy in ordinary people, therefore suchness and the wisdom of the noble ones are not found in words. Therefore, one should follow the meaning, and not cling to words. The Noble Lankavatara Sutra, Volume Three. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati said this to the Bhagavan
