O! Cessation is also of two kinds, namely: the cessation of continuity and the cessation of self-nature. Among them, the self-nature of all consciousnesses is of three kinds, namely: the self-nature of entering, the self-nature of karma, and the self-nature of truth. Great Wisdom, in short, there are three kinds of consciousness. In detail, there are eight kinds of self-nature. What are these three? Namely: true consciousness, appearing consciousness, and consciousness that individually distinguishes things. Great Wisdom, just as a very bright mirror can reflect images, so too is the appearance of appearing consciousness. Great Wisdom, appearing consciousness and consciousness that individually distinguishes things, these two are the self-nature of destruction and non-destruction, and the cause of one is one. Great Wisdom, the complete impregnation of inconceivable habits and the inconceivable complete transformation are the cause of appearing consciousness. Great Wisdom, the complete impregnation by taking various objects and the discrimination of beginningless time is the cause of consciousness that individually distinguishes things. Great Wisdom, for true consciousness, when various untrue obscurations and elaborations cease, all sense consciousnesses will cease. Great Wisdom, this is called the cessation of self-nature. Great Wisdom, the cessation of continuity among them is when the cause of connection ceases, continuity will cease. Whence arising ceases, and when the object of focus ceases, thereby continuity will cease. Great Wisdom, why is that? Because that is its place. Among them, the place refers to the cessation of beginningless discrimination, the suffering of the three realms, ignorance, craving, karma, and the reversal of causes and conditions, the appearance of one's own mind as an illusory realm, and subsequent observation, etc., which will be discussed. Great Wisdom, some ascetics or Brahmins manifest results from the cause of no seed or having seeds, as well as the time, place, and conditions of things, etc.

I and aggregates, realms, and sources all wish to arise, exist, or even perish after arising. Those of great wisdom would speak of permanence, action, birth, existence, nirvana, path, karma, fruit, the destruction of truth, or annihilation. Why is that? Because these cannot be directly seen, nor can the beginning be seen, because they are not part of those. Great wisdom, for example, when a clay pot is broken and becomes a shard, it cannot do the work of a clay pot. A burnt seed also cannot do the work of a sprout. Similarly, great wisdom, the objects of aggregates, realms, and sources that have ceased, are ceasing, and will cease are seen by the mind's own conceptualization. Because there is no cause, those sequential arising are impossible. Great wisdom, if consciousness arises from no seed or from a seed, meeting with three conditions, then it would be like hair growing on a turtle, and oil could be extracted from sand. Then, your vows would be lost, and it would also contradict the true meaning. Saying that there is a seed and there is no seed has such faults, so actions and deeds would become meaningless. Great wisdom, those non-Buddhists say that arising comes from the meeting of three conditions, but it does not arise from the gathering of actions and appearances, but they say that there is a separate cause. Great wisdom, that cause is the chief, the supreme, the person, the lord, time, and atoms. Furthermore, great wisdom, there are seven kinds of nature, namely, the nature of gathering things, the nature of characteristics, the nature of the great elements, the nature of cause, the nature of condition, and the nature of manifest accomplishment. Furthermore, great wisdom, there are seven kinds of ultimate truth, namely, the object of mind, the object of wisdom, the object of prajna, the object of view, the object beyond two views, the object beyond the bodhisattva ground, and the object of the appearance of the Tathagata.

Furthermore, Mahamati, these realities of the Tathagatas, Arhats, Samyaksambuddhas of the past, future, and present are the essence of the ultimate truth. Because the Tathagatas possess the essence of the ultimate truth, they perfect the worldly, supramundane, and supreme supramundane dharmas, the eye of noble wisdom, thereby entering into the distinction of self-characteristics and common characteristics, and distinguishing them as they are, thus being uncommon with the doctrines of heretics and wrong views. Mahamati, how is it uncommon with the doctrines of heretics and wrong views? For example, because they do not understand the view of discrimination towards their own objects, and do not realize that their own consciousness is merely an appearance, therefore, Mahamati, foolish common people speak of two kinds of views regarding the nature of reality and unreality. Moreover, Mahamati, they are completely deluded by the discrimination of time. What is called an object is the discrimination of one's own mind's appearance as the object of consciousness. Mahamati, for example, a lump of clay and dust particles are neither different nor non-different. Gold and ornaments are also the same. Mahamati, if a lump of clay and dust particles were different, then they would not be produced from them, but in reality they are produced from them, therefore they are not different. If they are not different, then there would be no distinction between a lump of clay and dust particles. Similarly, Mahamati, the transforming consciousnesses are the true nature of the Alaya-consciousness, and if they were different, then the Alaya-consciousness would not be the cause. If they are not different, then when the transforming consciousnesses cease, the Alaya-consciousness would also cease, thus its true nature would necessarily not cease, therefore, Mahamati, the true nature of the consciousnesses does not cease, but the nature of karma ceases.
