And again he listened, and the Blessed One said to him: "Mahamati, what is sound? It is the discrimination that is combined with words and letters. It arises from the combination of teeth, lips, palate, tongue, and double lips. The discrimination of speaking to each other, born from the cause of habitual tendencies, is called sound. Mahamati, what is meaning? It is like this: Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas go alone to a secluded place, and with the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating, they lead the way to the city of Nirvana with their own wisdom, which has become the place of habitual tendencies. Each one, with their own self-awareness, distinguishes the differences between the lands and places of the noble ones' realm, and the nature of meaning. If they thoroughly examine the entry, they are skilled in meaning. Furthermore, Mahamati, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is skilled in the meaning of sound, sound and meaning, or meaning and sound, are neither the same nor different, but truly follow and observe. Mahamati, if sound and meaning were different, then sound would not be the cause of clarifying meaning. Just as a lamp illuminates wealth, sound also follows meaning. For example, Mahamati, a person holding a lamp says, 'My wealth is here,' and looks at the wealth in this way. Mahamati, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, with the lamp of sound that discriminates words and sentences, follow the realm of meaning of self-awareness, which is free from the discrimination of words and sentences. Furthermore, Mahamati, regarding the unborn, the unceasing, the naturally completely liberated, the three vehicles, the one vehicle, the five dharmas, the mind, the nature, and so on, relying on the attachment to the appearance of sound, because of the attachment to appearance, like the discrimination of seeing various illusions, one falls into the views of addition and subtraction. Abiding in a different aspect, discriminating separately in a different aspect, for example, Mahamati, various illusions are seen in a different aspect, ordinary people discriminate separately in a different aspect, while the noble ones do not...

It is so. There is a saying about this: If one discriminates against the sound of reality, one will also add to the nature of reality. Because of adding to it, sentient beings will fall into hell. The aggregates do not have a self, and the aggregates do not have a self in them. They do not exist as discriminated, but their non-existence is not real either. All things exist, just as children discriminate. If they are seen as existing, everything will be seen as it is. Since all dharmas do not exist, neither do afflictions and purification. They do not not exist as they are seen, but their non-existence is not real either. Furthermore, by what means can you and other Bodhisattva Mahasattvas fully understand the various distinct characteristics of wisdom and consciousness, and quickly attain complete and perfect enlightenment, the unsurpassed? I will now explain to you the characteristics of wisdom and consciousness. Great wisdom, wisdom is of three kinds: worldly, transcendent, and supreme transcendent. From which arising and ceasing is consciousness, and not arising and not ceasing is wisdom. Furthermore, great wisdom, falling into characteristics and no characteristics, falling into existence and non-existence, arising from the causes of various characteristics is consciousness. The characteristic that completely transcends characteristics and no characteristics is wisdom. Furthermore, great wisdom, the characteristics such as these are consciousness, and the characteristic of diminishing is wisdom. There are three ways in which this is so: understanding the characteristics of self and commonality, understanding arising and ceasing, and understanding not arising and not ceasing. Worldly wisdom is the attachment to the aspects of existence and non-existence by non-Buddhists and all ordinary people. Transcendent wisdom is the attachment to the idea of falling into the characteristics of self and commonality by all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The supreme transcendent wisdom is that of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
