Although the great wisdom, such as this, completely understands that all the tirthikas have attained nirvana through discrimination, there is neither entering nor returning to this. O Mahamati, the nirvana of each of the tirthikas is due to faith in their own treatises, and if examined in detail in various ways, it will lead to confusion, and it will not abide as they discriminate. Because of the movement, coming, and going of the mind, there is no nirvana for anything. O Mahamati, you and other Bodhisattvas should learn this, and should refrain from viewing the nirvana of all the tirthikas. To this, it should be said: The tirthikas who hold the view of nirvana, discriminate on various things. Their discrimination is not a method of liberation. Bondage and what is bound, as well as liberation, all methods are abandoned. Although the tirthikas think of liberation, they will not become capable of liberation. The conduct of the tirthikas, as seen by wisdom, appears to be diverse and separate from each other. Therefore, if they have no liberation, how do fools examine it? Because of holding wrong views on cause and effect, all the tirthikas are intoxicated. Those who speak of existence and non-existence, therefore they have no liberation. Those who delight in the speech of children, do not apply broad wisdom to the true reality. Speech is the place of origin of the suffering of the three realms, while true reality is the cause of the destruction of suffering. Just like an image in a mirror, although it appears, it is not actually there. In the mirror of habits, children see the mind as dualistic. Because they do not understand the appearance of the mind, dualistic discrimination arises. If the appearance of the mind is fully understood, discrimination will not arise. The mind itself undergoes various changes, and the name and the basis of the name are also abandoned. Just as children discriminate, the way of appearance has no appearance. The three existences are merely discrimination, so there is no external meaning. The appearance of various discriminations is not understood by children. Through the differences of names and concepts, discrimination is explained in the sutras and from the sutras. Apart from speech, what is to be expressed cannot be understood either. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati said this to the Bhagavan:

O Lord! By what means can I and other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas become skilled in understanding the self-nature of the Tathagata? Please, Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, explain to me the self-enlightenment of the Buddha, so that I and others may also comprehend it. The Lord said: Mahamati, therefore, ask your question! I will answer as you can bear it. Mahamati asked: O Lord, is the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, made or unmade? Is he a cause or an effect? Is he a characteristic or the basis of a characteristic? Is he a statement or something to be stated? Is he wisdom or something to be known? O Lord, are the definitive meanings of such words one or different? The Lord said: Mahamati, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, is not made, nor unmade, nor a cause, nor an effect, in the definitive sense of such words. Why is that? Because both would be faulty. Mahamati, if the Tathagata were made, he would be impermanent; because of impermanence, we, the effects, would also become Tathagatas. Neither I nor other Tathagatas would think that way. If he were unmade, he would not be self-existent, and the proper accumulation of merit would be meaningless, because being unmade, he would be like a rabbit's horn or a barren woman's child. Mahamati, that which is neither a cause nor an effect is neither existent nor non-existent. That which is neither existent nor non-existent is beyond the four extremes. Mahamati, the four extremes are the practices of the world; that which is beyond the four extremes becomes merely a word, like a barren woman's child. Mahamati, a barren woman's child is merely a word, not falling into the four extremes. Because it does not fall into the four extremes, it is not a valid measure for the wise. The wise should thus understand the meaning of the words of all the Tathagatas. O
