It seems that one can understand the nature of appearance and say that discrimination is not allowed to arise. Mahamati, if you associate with the mantras and various conceited people of worldly tirthikas, you will gather all defilements and not gather the Dharma. Why do you ask me this way? World Honored One, what is the meaning of the words "defilement" and "Dharma"? The World Honored One said: Mahamati, it is good, good that you are considering the future beings and starting to explore the meaning of these two words. Mahamati, therefore, listen very carefully and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati said: "Okay, World Honored One." Then Mahamati listened to the World Honored One's teachings again, and the World Honored One said to him: Mahamati, what is defilement? For example, defilement is touch, combination, contamination, attachment, taste, attachment to external objects, falling into the two extremes with evil views, the arising of the five aggregates, birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, the arising of confusion, and the craving for the love of sentient beings, etc., which I and other Buddhas also call defilement. Mahamati, if one relies on those worldly tirthikas, one will gather all defilements and not gather the Dharma, and one will obtain worldly tirthikas. Mahamati, what is gathering the Dharma? For example, understanding the two selflessnesses of one's own mind's Dharma, and seeing the nature of selflessness of Dharma and person, therefore, discrimination is not allowed to arise. By fully knowing the reality of each place from low to high, the mind, intention, and consciousness are stopped, realizing the empowerment of the wisdom of all Buddhas, fully grasping the endless places, and being free to naturally accomplish all Dharmas, this is called Dharma. Mahamati, because of the play of all views, the objects of discrimination fall into the two extremes, so the tirthikas say this, like those children.

Most people fall into the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, but the wise do not. Because they cling to the doctrine of no cause, they will cling to the view of permanence. Because the cause disappears, the things of the cause do not exist, therefore they will cling to the view of annihilation. Because they do not see arising, abiding, and ceasing, it is called Dharma. This is the great wisdom that determines the boundary between Dharma and worldliness, and you and other Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should learn. Therefore, it should be said: subdue sentient beings with gathering, control with discipline, destroy views with wisdom, and greatly increase with liberation. All these are worldly plays, and everything said by non-Buddhists is false. Because there is a view of cause and effect, there is no own school. Like me, establish a school alone, completely abandoning cause and effect. Away from worldly plays, it should be declared to the disciples. Mind-only, there is no appearance. Abandoning permanence and annihilation, in the reality of the grasper and the grasped, the mind appears in two forms. As long as the mind is still active, that is the worldly play. If people see their own mind, they will not generate discrimination. Gathering is the fruit, achieving meaning, exhaustion is the fruit, not seen. If you fully understand gathering and exhaustion, you will not generate discrimination. Permanent and impermanent, done and undone, is it other or non-other. All these are the ways of worldly plays. Ārya Laṅkāvatāra, Chapter Six. Then, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati again asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, like this, Nirvana, the Nirvana that all non-Buddhists distinguish, the Nirvana Nirvana they speak of, whose term is that? The Blessed One replied: Mahamati, therefore you should listen carefully and keep it in mind. How non-Buddhists think of Nirvana, and how their discriminations conform to Nirvana, I will declare to you. Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati replied: Good, Blessed One.
