Questioning about the past, the Blessed One spoke thus: "Great Wisdom, some non-Buddhists believe that by ceasing the aggregates, realms, and sources, and by being free from desire for objects, and by seeing permanence and dharma as incompatible, many minds and mental factors do not arise. They believe that they no longer remember past, future, and present objects, and like a lamp, seed, and wind, they claim that discrimination does not occur because the cause is exhausted. Therefore, they think they have attained the wisdom of Nirvana, but Great Wisdom, because they cling to the view of destruction, they cannot truly be liberated from suffering. Great Wisdom, others believe that when discrimination towards objects ceases, like the exhaustion of an arrow's force, going to another realm is liberation. Some non-Buddhists also believe that liberation is achieved when wisdom and the objects of knowledge completely disappear. Some think that when discrimination does not arise and one can see permanence and impermanence, one attains true liberation. Some think that many discriminations of signs lead to the attainment of suffering, therefore, those who are not skilled in recognizing that their own mind is merely an appearance, fear and are frightened by signs. Desiring happiness by seeing signs, they claim to have attained the wisdom of Nirvana. Others believe that by understanding the self-characteristics and general characteristics of all internal and external dharmas, and that past, future, and present things do not perish because they exist, they think this is Nirvana. Some believe that self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, individuals, persons, and all dharmas do not perish, so they think this is Nirvana. Great Wisdom, some unskilled non-Buddhists think that by seeing the difference between nature and the individual, and the transformation of qualities, one can attain Nirvana. Some think that when merit and non-merit are completely exhausted, some think that when they know that afflictions are exhausted, some think that when they see that all worldly phenomena are controlled by the senses, they can attain Nirvana. Some believe that the arising of this world is mutually interpenetrating and not from a cause, they have a strong attachment to that cause, but because of ignorance, they cannot understand it. If they could understand it, they could attain Nirvana."

They think they have attained Nirvana. Some non-Buddhists with great wisdom, because they understand the truth and the path, think they have attained Nirvana. Some, because they understand merit and those who possess merit, and see oneness, otherness, both, and neither, transform into the thought of Nirvana. Some think that (Nirvana) arises from its own nature, like the colorful patterns of a peacock's feathers, the diverse origins of precious jewels, and the sharpness of thorns, seeing the inherent nature of things, they think they have attained Nirvana. Some with great wisdom, because they understand the twenty-five principles, and some because they uphold the nurturing of beings and the teaching of the six qualities, think they have attained Nirvana. Some, because they see the creator as time, believe that the arising of the world depends on time, and thus understanding, they think they have attained Nirvana. Some with great wisdom think it is existence (being), some fully understand existence and non-existence, and some see no difference between existence and Nirvana, and thus think they have attained Nirvana. Some with great wisdom, proclaiming the lion's roar of the all-knowing, think in this way: understanding that one's own mind is merely appearance, not clinging to external objects, seeing the absence of the four extremes, abiding in reality as it is, one's own mind not falling into the two extremes of conceptualizing appearance, not perceiving the object of grasping and the grasper, not seeing that all valid cognitions establish suchness, because it is illusory, not contemplating suchness, abandoning it, understanding one's own individual holy Dharma, realizing the two selflessnesses, the two afflictions completely ceasing, the two obscurations completely purified, from higher and higher grounds, in the Tathagata ground, through the samadhi of illusory images, reversing from mind, intellect, and consciousness, they think they have attained Nirvana. Thus, these inverted non-Buddhists, with various thoughts, what they say does not accord with reason and is abandoned by the wise, because all these with great wisdom think they have attained Nirvana with thoughts that fall into the two extremes.
