Grasping at the appearance as the appearance of consciousness. Mahamati, the consciousness of appearance and the consciousness that individually distinguishes things, these two are of the same nature, and the cause of one is also one. Mahamati, the consciousness of appearance arises from the cause of the complete transformation of inconceivable habitual tendencies. Mahamati, the consciousness that individually distinguishes things arises from the cause of distinguishing objects, and also from the cause of the habitual tendencies of beginningless elaboration. Among these, Mahamati, the cessation of all sense consciousnesses is like this: the various habitual tendencies of the unreal discrimination of the Alaya-consciousness cease. Mahamati, this is the cessation of nature. Mahamati, from where does the continuous cessation arise? Mahamati, what is meant by 'from where' is where it abides and what it focuses on. Among these, what is meant by 'where it abides' is the habitual tendencies of beginningless elaboration and bad destinations. What is meant by 'what it focuses on' is the appearance of one's own mind, discriminating in the realm of consciousness. Mahamati, this is like, for example, particles of clay and a lump of clay are neither the same nor different, just like gold and ornaments. Mahamati, if a lump of clay were different from particles of clay, then it would not be made from those (particles). Because it is also made from those particles of clay, therefore it is not different. If it were not different, then there would be no distinction between a lump of clay and particles. Similarly, Mahamati, the natures of the various entering consciousnesses are in accordance with the nature of the Alaya-consciousness. If they were different, they would not arise from the cause of the Alaya-consciousness. If they were not different, then when the entering consciousnesses cease, the Alaya-consciousness would also cease. In this way, the nature of the self would also not cease. Therefore, Mahamati, the own nature of the various consciousnesses will not cease, but the nature of karma will cease.

If the characteristic of one's own lineage ceases, then the ālaya-vijñāna will also cease. Mahāmati, if the ālaya-vijñāna ceases, then this statement will be no different from the annihilationist views of the tirthikas. Mahāmati, the tirthikas' statement is like this: Thus, if the grasping of objects is cut off, then the continuum of consciousness will be cut off; if the continuum of consciousness is cut off, then the continuum of beginningless time will also be cut off. Mahāmati, the tirthikas say that the continuum arises from a cause, but they do not say that other than the cause, eye-consciousness arises from the aggregation of form and appearance. Mahāmati, the cause they speak of is Īśvara, puruṣa, the senses, time, and atoms. Furthermore, Mahāmati, there are seven natures of things, namely, the nature of aggregation, the thing of the nature of things, the thing of characteristics, the thing of the nature of the great elements, the thing of cause, the thing of condition, and the thing of accomplishment, these are seven. Mahāmati, there are also seven ultimate meanings, namely, the realm of mind, the realm of wisdom, the realm of the two views, the realm beyond the two views, the realm of no appearance, the realm transcended by the sons, and the realm of self-awareness of the Tathāgatas. These, Mahāmati, are the nature of things and the essence of ultimate meaning of the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones of the past, future, and present. Because they possess the nature of things and the essence of ultimate meaning, the Tathāgatas, with the eye of the wisdom of the noble ones, distinguish and establish the supreme Dharma of the mundane and supramundane, including the self-characteristics and the general characteristics, in such a way that they do not become common with the statements and wrong views of the tirthikas. Mahāmati, how is it that it is not common with the statements and wrong views of the tirthikas? It is like this: Mahāmati, the various consciousnesses
