Cessation, nirvana, and space, as well as the two kinds of cessation, these are grasped by the uninitiated, while the noble ones have abandoned both existence and non-existence. Then, again, the Blessed One spoke thus to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati: Mahamati, the characteristics of emptiness, non-origination, non-duality, and absence of self-nature are contained within the sutras of all Buddhas. In whichever sutra they may be, one should comprehend this meaning. Mahamati, those sutras are taught in accordance with the thoughts of all sentient beings and are of distorted meaning; they are not words that establish reality as it is. Mahamati, for example, a mirage deceives deer, as they become attached due to their clinging to the reality of water, but there is no water there. Mahamati, similarly, all the Dharma taught in the sutras is to satisfy the individual discriminations of the uninitiated, and is not the language that distinguishes the wisdom of the noble ones. Therefore, Mahamati, you should follow the meaning and not be attached to the expression of words. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati reported to the Blessed One: Blessed One, the Tathagatagarbha that you have spoken of in the sutras, the Blessed One has said is naturally luminous, pure, and primordially pure, possessing the thirty-two marks, and existing within the bodies of all sentient beings. Blessed One, just as a precious and priceless jewel is completely wrapped in a dirty cloth, it is wrapped in the cloth of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas, covered by the stains of desire, hatred, and ignorance, and defiled by the impurity of discrimination, yet it is said to be permanent, constant, and enduring. Blessed One, how is this talk of the Tathagatagarbha different from the talk of the 'self' by the tirthikas? Blessed One, the tirthikas also speak of the 'self' as impermanent, without a maker, without qualities, pervasive, and indestructible.

Reverently I prostrate! The Blessed One said: "Mahamati, my teaching of the Tathagatagarbha is not the same as the doctrine of the self as taught by the heretics. Mahamati, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, teach the Tathagatagarbha in terms of emptiness, the ultimate reality, Nirvana, the unborn, the uncharacterized, the desireless, and so on. By teaching the gate of the Tathagatagarbha, they show the realm of non-discrimination, the realm of the signless, in order to lead children away from the place where they are destroyed by the absence of self. Therefore, Mahamati, Bodhisattvas-Mahasattvas who appear in the future and the present should not cling to the notion of self. Mahamati, for example, a potter makes various kinds of vessels from a single lump of clay, using his hands, skill, tools, water, thread, and diligence. Mahamati, similarly, the Tathagatas, with wisdom and skillful means, completely reverse all the characteristics of discrimination related to the non-self of dharmas, and thus teach the Tathagatagarbha, or teach the non-self. Just like the potter, they explain it with various kinds of words and letters. Therefore, Mahamati, teaching the Tathagatagarbha is not the same as the doctrine of the self as taught by the heretics. Mahamati, the Tathagatas teach the Tathagatagarbha in order to guide those who cling to the self as taught by the heretics, and thus proclaim the Tathagatagarbha. How can those who have minds fallen into the view of discriminating a false self possess the intention of abiding in the realm of the three doors of liberation and quickly attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? Mahamati, for this purpose, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, teach the Tathagatagarbha."

It is done. Therefore, this is not the same as the non-Buddhist who speaks of the self. Mahamati, therefore, in order to dispel the views of the non-Buddhists, one should follow the Tathagatagarbha, which is without self. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke this verse: Beings, continuity, and aggregates, Likewise, causes, particles, and Lords and agents, Are all conceptualized by the Mind-Only school. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati, looking at the assembly of beings in the future, again requested the Blessed One: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattva Mahasattvas become practitioners of great yoga, realizing yoga, please explain to me. The Blessed One said: Mahamati, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who possess four qualities become practitioners of great yoga. What are the four? They are: contemplating the appearance of one's own mind, abandoning the views of arising, abiding, and ceasing, realizing that external objects are not real, and having faith in the self-realized wisdom of each noble one. Mahamati, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who possess these four qualities become practitioners of great yoga. Mahamati, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva become skilled in contemplating the appearance of one's own mind? It is like this: the three realms are only one's own mind, free from self and what belongs to self, without wavering, free from acceptance and rejection, stained by the habitual tendencies of evil deeds, the place of elaboration from beginningless time, connected by being close to the various forms of the three realms, and appearing to follow the various conceptualizations of body, enjoyment, place, and activity. Thus, one thoroughly understands. Mahamati, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is skilled in contemplating the appearance of one's own mind. Mahamati, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva with regard to arising, abiding, and
