Because of discrimination, discriminating consciousness arises. Mahamati, therefore, you should be free from observing the nature of causes and conditions, and actions, whether sequentially or simultaneously. To this, it should be said: For this, by any conditions, there is neither arising nor ceasing. Only imputed conditions, will arise and cease. The connection between arising and ceasing with conditions, should not be reversed. The discrimination that children arise from conditions, that is what should be reversed. Because habitual tendencies delude the mind, appearing in the three realms, whether conditions exist or not, phenomena do not arise. Non-arisen conditions do not give rise, and nothing will cease. Like a flower in the sky and hair, when one sees the union of fabrication, then the grasper and the grasped, will also be seen as reversed and return. There is no need to produce what is unborn. Any conditions, at any time or place, do not exist, this is only said in behavior. Then, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati again said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, by deeply understanding the essence of the nature of word discrimination, and the differences of various distinctions, I and other Bodhisattva Mahasattvas can understand the two meanings of what can be said and what cannot be said, thereby quickly attaining the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, manifesting Buddhahood, and purifying the understanding of the two meanings of what can be said and what cannot be said for all sentient beings. Please, Blessed One, explain to me the Dharma text called the essence of the nature of word discrimination. The Blessed One said: Mahamati, therefore, listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. Blessed One, good, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati listened to the teachings of the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to him: Mahamati, there are four kinds of nature of word discrimination, namely the words of nature and the

Words, and words of manifest attachment to evil destinies, and words of discrimination from beginningless time. Mahamati, the characteristic words among them arise from manifest attachment to the form of one's own discrimination as a sign. Mahamati, the words of dreams arise from remembering previously experienced objects and from the absence of objects of realization. Again, Mahamati, the words of discrimination of evil destinies arise from remembering the deeds previously done by enemies. Mahamati, the words of discrimination from beginningless time arise from the seed of one's own evil destiny of manifest attachment to the elaboration of beginningless time. Mahamati, these are the four characteristics of the discrimination of words. This is a restatement of what has been said. Then, again, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati asked the Blessed One for the sake of that meaning: Blessed One, please explain to me again by what means, from what, how, and by what the discrimination of words, the object of manifest attachment of the discrimination of words, arises for people. The Blessed One said: Mahamati, the arising of words is from the aggregation of the head, chest, nose, neck, palate, lips, tongue, and teeth. Mahamati asked: Blessed One, are discrimination and words different or one? The Blessed One said: Mahamati, words are not different from discrimination, nor are they one. Why is that? For example, because of the characteristic of arising from its cause, words arise as discrimination. Mahamati, if these words were different from discrimination, then they would not arise from the cause of discrimination. If they were one, then the words would not clearly express the meaning. But they do express the meaning, therefore they are neither different nor one. Again, Mahamati asked: Blessed One, is the word itself the ultimate truth? Or is the meaning expressed by the word the ultimate truth? The Blessed One said: Ma-

O Mahamati, words are not the ultimate truth. What is expressed by words is also not the ultimate truth. Why is that? For example, the wisdom of the noble ones expresses the truth of the ultimate truth, because it enters into the ultimate truth, so words themselves are not the ultimate truth. O Mahamati, the ultimate truth is to be realized by the noble ones individually through their own self-realizing wisdom, it is not the realm of the mind of verbal discrimination. Therefore, discrimination cannot express the ultimate truth. O Mahamati, words are born and perish and are unstable, they arise from mutual causes and conditions. O Mahamati, whatever arises from mutual causes and conditions cannot express the ultimate truth. O Mahamati, because there is no characteristic of self and other, words cannot express characteristics. O Mahamati, furthermore, because it only follows the appearance of one's own mind, and there are no various different characteristics of external objects, discrimination cannot realize the ultimate truth. Therefore, O Mahamati, you should be free from the discrimination of various words. To this, it should be said: The self-nature of all things does not exist, and words are also non-existent in the same way. Emptiness or the meaning of emptiness is not seen by ordinary people, they wander everywhere. All things have no self-nature, and human words are also fabricated, and that is also non-existent. Like dreams and illusions, things that are completely fabricated will not be reborn, nor will they attain nirvana. Just like kings and merchants, using various tempting wild animals, lure children to high places, and then really give them wild animals. Similarly, I also use the images of various characteristics of things to tell the children the true ultimate reality that each one realizes for themselves. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati again said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, realizing that all dharmas appear as the realm of one's own mind, having the characteristic of discrimination and not having the characteristic of discrimination, one and different, both and neither, both existing and not existing, permanent and impermanent.
