Knowing and understanding. Mahamati, this is the second characteristic of the parikalpita nature. Abiding in this and not focusing on it, that is the paratantra nature. Mahamati, what is the parinishpanna nature? For example, the suchness that is free from the discrimination of names, appearances, and the characteristics of things, through obtaining the wisdom realization of the noble ones, becomes the realm of the self-realized wisdom of each individual noble one. Mahamati, this parinishpanna nature is the heart essence of the Tathagatas. Then, at that time, the Bhagavan spoke this verse: Names and appearances are all parikalpita, the characteristics of the two natures are those. Real knowledge and suchness, are the characteristics of the parinishpanna nature. Mahamati, this is a Dharma category called the Differentiation of the Characteristics of the Five Dharmas, which is the realm of the self-realized wisdom of each individual noble one, and you and other Bodhisattvas should also study it. Furthermore, Mahamati, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should be skilled in understanding the differentiation of the characteristics of the two kinds of selflessness. Mahamati, what are the characteristics of the two kinds of selflessness? Because of the attachment to grasping names and forms, consciousness arises from all the sense doors, it is like this: Regarding ignorance, and the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas arising from karma and craving, there is no self and no belonging to self, knowing that the vessel, body, and place of one's own mind's appearance are measured by the mind of self-grasping. Like flowing water, seeds, fire, wind, and clouds, changing separately from one moment to another, like a jumping monkey and a bee, acting in an impure realm, without protector or refuge, like a fire that does not know satisfaction, arising from the cause of the habitual tendencies of the realm of elaboration from beginningless time, revolving like the wheel of a water bucket, holding various forms of bodies in the cycle of existence, appearing and occurring like illusion, corpses, and rotation. Mahamati, whoever is skilled in this characteristic, that is, knows the selflessness of persons.

It is called "Wisdom." Mahamati, what is it to know the selflessness of dharmas? It is to understand the nature of the imputed characteristics of the aggregates, realms, and sense bases. Mahamati, how are the aggregates, realms, and sense bases free from self and so on, and are merely an accumulation of aggregates, connected by the thread of the causes of karma and craving, arising without wavering because they have become mutual conditions? Likewise, Mahamati, the aggregates are also free from their own and common characteristics, and are distinguished by the discrimination of the imputed characteristics that are not true; only children discriminate them, not the noble ones. Mahamati, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who meditates on all dharmas as being separate from mind, intellect, consciousness, the five dharmas, and nature is skilled in the selflessness of dharmas. Mahamati, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is skilled in the selflessness of dharmas, because he thoroughly understands the absence of appearances, will soon attain the first Bodhisattva ground, and because he understands the distinctions of the nature of the ground, after the Extremely Joyful, he will also become skilled in the other nine grounds and attain the Cloud of Dharma. Remaining in that, he will perfectly discriminate the realm of activity of the nature of illusion and attain realization. In a great immeasurable palace like a lotus, he will sit on a great king of jewels, a lotus of jewels, adorned with jewels and many pearls. Surrounded by the sons of the Victorious One who are in harmony with him, and empowered by the hand of the Buddhas who have come from all the Buddha-fields, he will be manifestly empowered like the son of a wheel-turning king. Having transcended the ground of the sons of the Buddhas, because he has individually understood the dharmas of knowledge for himself, seeing the selflessness of dharmas, he will become a Thus-Gone One who possesses the Dharmakaya. Mahamati, this is the characteristic of the selflessness of one's own dharmas. Mahamati, you and other Bodhisattvas should also train in this. The Holy Lankavatara, Volume Three. Then again, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Mahamati to the Blessed One
