The nature of the faults and benefits of not knowing and of fully knowing, etc., is this. Maitreya, regarding its meaning of realm, there are five realms, namely, the realm of the world, the realm of sentient beings, the realm of dharma, the realm of taming, and the realm of the means of taming. Maitreya, one should also understand that through those three kinds of meanings, all meanings are also summarized. World-Honored One, how does the wisdom arising from hearing truly know each and every meaning? How does the wisdom arising from thinking truly know each and every meaning? World-Honored One, how does the wisdom arising from the cultivation of shamatha and vipashyana truly know each and every meaning? What are the differences between them? The Buddha said: Maitreya, the wisdom arising from hearing of a Bodhisattva abides in words and phrases, is as it sounds, has no hidden meaning, has not yet manifested, accords with liberation, and cannot cause liberation, and it truly knows each and every meaning. Maitreya, the wisdom arising from thinking abides only in words and phrases, is not as it sounds, has hidden meanings, has already manifested, is extremely in accordance with liberation, and cannot cause liberation, and it truly knows each and every meaning. Maitreya, the wisdom arising from the cultivation of a Bodhisattva abides in words and phrases and does not abide in words and phrases, is as it sounds and has hidden meanings, manifests through the image of the object of concentration that accords with the object of knowledge, is extremely and profoundly in accordance with liberation, and also truly knows the meaning that can cause liberation. Maitreya, the difference between them is like that. The World-Honored One thus taught. World-Honored One, what is the knowing that a Bodhisattva cultivates shamatha and vipashyana, truly knowing each and every dharma and truly knowing each and every meaning? What is seeing? Maitreya, I have explained knowing and seeing with many names, but I will speak briefly. Whatever is the wisdom of shamatha and vipashyana that focuses on mixed dharmas, that is knowing.

That which is the quiescence and insight wisdom that focuses on the unmixed Dharma is seeing. World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva who meditates on quiescence and insight eliminate characteristics with what intention and with what characteristic? Maitreya, by attending to suchness, one eliminates the characteristics of Dharma and the characteristics of meaning. In name, one does not perceive the self-nature of name, nor does one truly see the characteristic of its location, thus it is eliminated. Just as with name, so too should it be understood with words, letters, and all meanings. Maitreya, between realms, one does not perceive the self-nature of the realm, nor does one truly see the characteristic of its location, thus it is eliminated. World Honored One, is it also possible to eliminate the characteristic of truly knowing the meaning of suchness separately? Maitreya, there is no characteristic in truly knowing the meaning of suchness separately, since it is not perceived, what can be eliminated in it? Maitreya, truly knowing the meaning of suchness separately overcomes all characteristics of Dharma and meaning, but I do not say that it can be overcome by anything. World Honored One, just as the World Honored One used the examples of a container with muddy water, an impure mirror, and a disturbed lake to illustrate that one cannot examine the characteristics of self-nature, but can do the opposite, similarly, an uncultivated mind cannot know things as they truly are, but a cultivated mind can, as you have said, what is the individual examination by the mind in this? From what is suchness spoken? What is spoken? Maitreya, individual examination by the mind is for three reasons: individual examination by the mind arising from hearing, individual examination by the mind arising from thinking, and individual examination by the mind arising from meditation. It is taught from the suchness of consciousness. World Honored One, how many characteristics are taught for a Bodhisattva who thus truly knows Dharma and meaning separately and enters into the elimination of characteristics? With what
