Eighth, the Maitreya Chapter. Eighth, the Maitreya Chapter. Then, Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, where does a Bodhisattva reside? Upon what does he rely to cultivate śamatha and vipaśyanā in the Great Vehicle? The Blessed One replied: Maitreya, he resides and relies upon the various establishments of the designation of dharma, and upon not abandoning the aspiration for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Blessed One, among the four objects of focus for śamatha and vipaśyanā, namely, the image with conceptualization, the image without conceptualization, the limit of objects, and the complete accomplishment of purpose, which one is the object of śamatha? He replied: One, namely, the image without conceptualization. Which one is the object of vipaśyanā? He replied: Only one, namely, the image with conceptualization. Which ones are the objects of both? He replied: Two, namely, the limit of objects, and the complete accomplishment of purpose. Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva, relying upon and abiding in those four objects of focus for śamatha and vipaśyanā, fully seek śamatha and become skilled in vipaśyanā? He replied: Maitreya, I have established the designation of dharma as follows: the sūtra section, the section of verses, the section of prophecies, the section of gāthās, the section of self-utterances, the section of narratives, the section of realizations, the section of such occurrences, the section of jātaka tales, the extensive section, the section of wondrous dharmas, and the section of definitive teachings, whatever is explained to the Bodhisattvas, the Bodhisattva should listen well, hold well, become proficient in recitation, examine well with the mind, and understand thoroughly through seeing, and then reside alone in a secluded place, properly attending within, and whatever dharmas are well considered, he should attend to them with the mind, and with whatever mind he attends, he attends continuously within with that mind. Thus entering and therein,

That which, abiding in it many times, brings about extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind is called śamatha (calm abiding). Thus, a bodhisattva should fully seek śamatha. Having heard of extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind, abiding in that itself, abandoning the aspects of mind, for those dharmas that have been thought about, within, in the image of the object of samādhi (concentration), one individually attends and believes. Thus, for those images of the object of samādhi, discriminating the meaning of what is to be known, and thoroughly discriminating, completely understanding, completely examining, enduring, desiring, differentiating, seeing, and attending, that is called vipaśyanā (insight). Thus, a bodhisattva is skilled in vipaśyanā. Blessed One, when that bodhisattva inwardly attends to the mind focused on the mind, until extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind have not been obtained, what should that attention be called? Maitreya, it is not śamatha, it should be said to be endowed with belief and similarity that are in accordance with śamatha. Blessed One, until that bodhisattva has not obtained extreme pliancy of body and mind, how should the attention that attends within to those dharmas that have been well thought about, in the image of the object of samādhi, be called? Maitreya, it is not vipaśyanā, it should be said to be endowed with belief and similarity that are in accordance with vipaśyanā. Blessed One, are the path of śamatha and the path of vipaśyanā different? Or are they not different? The Buddha said: Maitreya, they are neither different nor not different. Why are they not different? Because vipaśyanā focuses on the mind that focuses on the mind. Why are they not not different? Because it focuses on the image that is accompanied by conceptualization. Blessed One, what is that image of the object of samādhi that causes observation? Is it different from that mind? Or is it not different? Maitreya, it should be said that it is not different. Why

If asked, are they different? Because the image is merely consciousness. Maitreya! Consciousness is distinguished only by the object of consciousness. This is what I said. World Honored One! If the image, the object of meditative absorption, is not different from the form and mind, then how does the mind perceive the mind itself? The Buddha said: Maitreya! It does not perceive any dharma in any dharma, but the mind that arises in that way appears in that way. Maitreya! It is like this, for example, relying on form, in the very pure center of a mirror, although one sees the form itself, one thinks one sees the image. There, the form and the appearance of the image appear to be different in meaning. Similarly, the mind that arises in that way, and what is called the image, the object of meditative absorption, also appear to be different in meaning from it. World Honored One! The forms, etc., that appear to sentient beings, As the image of the mind, are those that exist naturally also not different from the mind? The Buddha said: Maitreya! It should be said that they are not different. Because children with inverted minds do not truly understand the nature of those images as mere consciousness, they think perversely. World Honored One! In what situation does a Bodhisattva practice only vipassanā? The Buddha said: When one continuously attends to and contemplates the nature of the mind. In what situation does one practice only śamatha? The Buddha said: When one continuously attends to and contemplates the uninterrupted mind. In what situation do śamatha and vipassanā merge and become a union? The Buddha said: When one attends only to the one-pointedness of the mind. World Honored One! What is the characteristic of the mind? Maitreya! It is the object of vipassanā, the object of meditative absorption, the image associated with conceptual thought. What is the uninterrupted mind? Maitreya! It is the object of śamatha, the mind that focuses on the image. What is the one-pointedness of the mind? It is the object of meditative absorption.
