Recognizing that image as merely consciousness. After recognizing that, whatever is attending to it as it is. World Honored One, how many kinds of Vipassanā are there? Maitreya, there are three kinds, namely, those arising from characteristics, those arising from seeking, and those arising from individual observation. What is arising from characteristics? Whatever Vipassanā is attending only to the image of the object of Samādhi, which is associated with discrimination. What is arising from seeking? Whatever Vipassanā is attending in order to thoroughly understand those dharmas that have not been thoroughly understood by wisdom. What is arising from individual observation? Whatever Vipassanā is attending in order to touch the bliss of those dharmas that have been thoroughly understood by wisdom through liberation. How many kinds of Śamatha are there? The Blessed One taught: Because of following the uninterrupted mind, it should also be said to be of three kinds. Maitreya, and Śamatha is of eight kinds, namely, the first Dhyāna practitioner, the second, the third, the fourth Dhyāna practitioner, the infinite space, the infinite consciousness, the nothingness, and the non-perception and non-non-perception. There are also four kinds, namely, immeasurable loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and immeasurable equanimity. World Honored One, Śamatha and Vipassanā are sometimes called abiding in Dharma, and sometimes called not abiding in Dharma, what is abiding in Dharma? What is not abiding in Dharma? Maitreya, whatever Śamatha and Vipassanā are in meaning by following the characteristics of the Dharma as it is held and as it is thought, that is abiding in Dharma. Without relying on the Dharma that is held and thought, but relying on other instructions and following, Śamatha and Vipassanā in meaning, such as: blue or yellow, or those in accordance with these, or all conditioned things are impermanent, or suffering, or all dharmas are without self, or Nirvāṇa is peaceful, and Śamatha and Vipassanā in accordance with these.

It should be known that it is not abiding in the Dharma. Maitreya, for that, I rely on the Samatha and Vipassana of abiding in the Dharma, and call the Bodhisattva who follows the Dharma a sharp faculty. Relying on not abiding in the Dharma, those who follow with faith are called dull faculties. Blessed One, Samatha and Vipassana are also regarded as focusing on non-mixed Dharmas, and also as focusing on mixed Dharmas. What is focusing on non-mixed Dharmas? What is focusing on mixed Dharmas? Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva cultivates Samatha and Vipassana, focusing on the individual Dharmas such as the Sutra Pitaka, from the Dharmas that are held and contemplated, that is Samatha and Vipassana focusing on non-mixed Dharmas. If those Dharmas such as the Sutra Pitaka are all combined into one, all gathered together, all solidified, made into one mass, and one contemplates, 'All these Dharmas are inclined towards Suchness, flowing towards Suchness, returning to Suchness, inclined towards Bodhi, flowing towards Bodhi, returning to Bodhi, inclined towards Nirvana, flowing towards Nirvana, returning to Nirvana, inclined towards transformation, flowing towards transformation, returning to transformation. All these Dharmas are immeasurable and countless virtuous Dharmas, spoken of by explicit expression.' That is Samatha and Vipassana focusing on mixed Dharmas. Blessed One, Samatha and Vipassana are also regarded as focusing on Dharmas with small mixture, also regarded as focusing on Dharmas that have become greatly mixed, and also regarded as focusing on Dharmas with immeasurable mixture. What is focusing on Dharmas with small mixture? What is focusing on Dharmas that have become greatly mixed? What is focusing on Dharmas with immeasurable mixture? Maitreya, from the Sutra Pitaka to the extremely extensive category, as well as the category of rare Dharmas, and the category of definitive teachings, each combined into one. It should be known that Samatha and Vipassana of contemplation are focusing on Dharmas with small mixture. How those Sutra Pitakas and so on are held
