O, Kuntudarwa, just like that, the accumulation of merit from the Dharma category of the Sutra of Pairs cannot be compared by anyone other than the Tathagata. O, Kuntudarwa, for example, as many sesame seeds as there are, that many Tathagatas would there be. Even if all of them were to completely express the merit of the root of virtue from hearing the Dharma category of the Sutra of Pairs, the merit would not be exhausted even by analogy. What need is there to mention writing, reading, and causing others to write? Bodhisattva Kuntudarwa asked: O, Bhagavan, how much merit will be generated by writing? The Bhagavan replied: Son of good family, listen! If all the grass or trees in the three thousand great thousand world realms were cut into pieces the size of a finger, and, O, Kuntudarwa, also listen to two analogies. As many stones or cliffs, lands or fine dust particles as there are in the three thousand great thousand world realms, if all of them were to become wheel-turning kings ruling over the four continents, could their merit be compared? Kuntudarwa replied: O, Bhagavan, it cannot be compared. Other than the Tathagata. O, Kuntudarwa, just like that, the accumulation of merit from writing the Dharma category of the Sutra of Pairs cannot be compared either. Compared to the accumulation of merit of as many wheel-turning kings as there are, even if one were to write and place even a single letter of this Dharma category, one would generate a much greater accumulation of merit. The wheel-turning kings with extremely great merit are not like that. O, Kuntudarwa, just like that, the merit of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who abides in upholding and practicing the sacred Dharma of the Great Vehicle cannot be overcome by a wheel-turning king. Similarly, the accumulation of merit from writing the Dharma category of the Sutra of Pairs cannot be compared either. O, Kuntudarwa, this Sutra of Pairs is the revealer of the treasure of merit. It is what pacifies all afflictions. It is the lamp of all dharmas.

It is an interval, it is an interval. It subdues all sinful demons. It makes the abode of all Bodhisattvas blaze brightly. It manifestly accomplishes all dharmas, manifestly accomplishes all dharmas. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Prativira addressed the Bhagavan as follows: "Bhagavan, practicing brahmacharya here is extremely difficult. Why is that? Bhagavan, the conduct of the Tathagata is rare, and so is the practice of brahmacharya. When one practices brahmacharya, one will see the Tathagata directly, and one will see the Tathagata day and night. When one sees the Tathagata directly and sees the Tathagata day and night, then one will see the Buddha-field. When one sees the Buddha-field, then one will see all the treasures. At the time of death, one will not be afraid. One will not be born in a mother's womb. One will not always be sorrowful. One will not be bound by the rope of craving." Having spoken thus, the Bhagavan said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Prativira: "Prativira, the appearance of the Tathagatas is difficult to obtain." He replied: "Bhagavan, it is difficult to obtain. The Sugata is difficult to obtain." The Bhagavan said: "Prativira, likewise, this category of the Dharma of the Twin Sutra is also difficult to obtain. Prativira, whoever hears this category of the Dharma of the Twin Sutra, will remember his past lives for eighty kalpas. For sixty thousand kalpas, he will obtain the Chakravartin king. For eight thousand kalpas, he will obtain Indra. For twenty thousand kalpas, he will be born with the same share as the gods of the Pure Abodes. For thirty-eight thousand kalpas, he will become Maha Brahma. For ninety-nine thousand kalpas, he will not fall into evil destinies. For a hundred thousand kalpas, he will not be born among the pretas."
