Then Kuntu Pawa (Constantly Brave) asked: Blessed One, how does one completely perfect the roots of virtue? After asking this, the Blessed One spoke thus to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Constantly Brave: Know that the root of virtue is equal to the Tathagata. Kuntu Pawa asked: How does one make the root of virtue equal to the Tathagata? The Blessed One said: Constantly Brave, know that the one who speaks the Dharma is equal to the Tathagata. Kuntu Pawa asked: Blessed One, who is the one who speaks the Dharma? The Blessed One said: Whoever proclaims the Sutra of Pairs is the one who speaks the Dharma. Kuntu Pawa asked: Blessed One, if those who merely hear the categories of the Dharma of the Sutra of Pairs will generate such a great mass of merit, what need is there to mention those who write and recite it? How much merit will they generate? The Blessed One said: Constantly Brave, listen! For example, in each of the four directions, there are Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas as numerous as the sands of twelve Ganges rivers, who abide for twelve kalpas and teach the Dharma. Even if one were to speak of the mass of merit of writing down this Sutra of Pairs, one could not fathom the extent of that mass of merit, nor could one express it in words. Even if Buddhas as numerous as the sands of forty-eight Ganges rivers were to speak of the mass of merit of writing it down, they could not. What need is there to mention those who write, remember, and recite it? They will become a treasure of Dharma! The Bodhisattva Constantly Brave asked: Blessed One, how much will be the mass of merit of reciting? Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke these verses: Whatever virtue there is from merely reciting a four-line verse, the Conquerors as numerous as the sands of eighty-four Ganges rivers, whatever merit they have from reciting the Sutra of Pairs here, even if one were to speak of it continuously, that merit would never be exhausted. The Dharma taught by the Buddhas,

It is difficult to describe and limitless. Also, at that time and at that moment, eighty-four kotis, hundred thousands of gods, wherever the Dharma category of the Sutra of Pairs was taught, there they folded their palms and supplicated the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, for what reason has the Blessed One placed such a treasure of Dharma in this Jambudvipa? It is excellent, excellent! Furthermore, eighteen kotis, hundred thousands of naked ascetics arrived at the place where the Blessed One was, and supplicated the Blessed One, saying: Hey, Shramana Gautama is victorious! The Blessed One declared: The Tathagata is always victorious! Hey, heretical naked ones, how can you heretics be victorious? They said: Please be victorious! Shramana Gautama, please be victorious! The Blessed One declared: I have not seen you victorious. You dwell in reversal, how can you be victorious? Naked ones, listen! I will speak beneficial words to you. The mind of a child has no happiness, how can you be victorious? I, with the Buddha's eye, will also show the profound path. Then, those naked ascetics became angry with the Blessed One and developed a mind of disbelief. At that time and at that moment, Indra, the lord of the gods, brandished his vajra, and then, those eighteen kotis of naked ascetics were terrified and frightened, exhausted by great suffering, weeping and shedding tears. The Tathagata also made his body invisible. Then, those naked ascetics, weeping with their faces full of tears, not seeing the Blessed One, spoke these verses: Here there are no friends or relatives, likewise there are no parents, it appears like a wilderness, empty houses have no dwelling. Here there is no water, no trees, and no birds. Here no beings are seen, feeling the suffering of being without protection, because not seeing the Tathagata, one experiences unbearable great suffering. Again, at that time, those eighteen kotis of naked ascetics rose from their seats, knelt on the ground with both knees, making sounds and expressing themselves with songs. Tathagata, compassionate one!
