说“树叶、花朵、果实都长出来了”，如果有人白天这样说，你的话很难令人信服，这样的事情我没见过也没听说过。然后那个人合掌，对国王这样说：陛下您种树，请您看看是否扎根了。然后国王和三千万大臣一起出来，也将那两个人关进了监狱。然后国王亲自种树，那树也没有扎根，也没有长出树叶、花朵和果实，然后国王生气地说：你们快去拿砍树的斧头来！说完就拿来了。然后国王生气地砍伐了那个人种的树，砍掉了树的树叶、花朵和果实，砍倒那棵树后，变成了十二棵树。砍倒那十二棵树后，长出了二十四棵七宝树，带着树根，带着树叶，带着嫩芽。然后从那二十四棵树中，飞出了二十四只金喙、金冠、七宝树叶的鸟。然后国王被愤怒冲昏了头脑，自己拿起斧头砍那棵树，砍树的时候流出了甘露。然后国王不高兴了，命令说：去把那两个人从监狱里放出来！侍从回答：遵命！然后迅速跑去，把那两个人从监狱里放出来，带到树所在的地方。国王说：砍了一棵树，却变成了两棵，然后变成了二十四棵，这是你种的吗？我种的树，既没有树根，也没有树叶、花朵和果实。然后那个人回答说：大王啊，我有什么样的福报，您就没有那样的福报。然后三千万大臣双膝跪地，对那个人说：以前的国王不行，您应该当国王。然后那个人对那些大臣说了这些偈颂：国王的享乐我不需要，财物和

Saying, "Leaves, flowers, and fruits have appeared," if someone says this during the day, your words are hard to believe. I have neither seen nor heard of such a thing. Then that person folded his hands and said to the king, "Your Majesty, you planted the tree. Please see if it has taken root." Then the king, together with thirty million ministers, went outside, and the two men were also put in prison. Then the king himself planted the tree, but the tree did not take root, nor did it produce leaves, flowers, or fruits. Then the king became angry and said, "Quickly bring the axes for cutting down trees!" After saying this, they were brought. Then the king, angry at the tree planted by that man, cut off the leaves, flowers, and fruits of the tree. When that single tree was cut down, twelve trees appeared. When the twelve trees were cut down, twenty-four trees of the seven precious substances appeared, complete with roots, leaves, and sprouts. Then from those twenty-four trees, twenty-four birds with golden crests, golden beaks, and leaves of the seven precious substances flew out. Then the king, overwhelmed by anger, took an axe in his own hand and struck the tree. When the tree was struck, nectar flowed out. Then the king became unhappy and commanded, "Go and release those two men from prison!" The attendants replied, "As you command!" Then they ran quickly, released the two men from prison, and brought them to the place where the tree was. The king said, "You planted the tree that, when cut down, became two, and then became twenty-four? The tree I planted has neither roots, nor leaves, nor flowers, nor fruits." Because you cut down that tree, Among the hundred kotis of trees, Twenty-four kotis were able to abide. For which sentient being cultivated this tree, But did not know its value, In the future, due to sinful deeds, They will also taste unpleasant results. The king said: I do not understand this principle, Please great ascetic, explain. The birds said: This is the light of the world, It will become a guide, From the prison of cyclic existence, Liberating all sentient beings. The king said: Who did not plant the tree? Who is the second born person? What sinful deeds did he do? Please, O twice-born ones, speak! The birds said: Who did not plant the tree? That is the foolish Devadatta, If he has not done the slightest good, How can his tree grow? Then, at that time, thirty million kotis of ministers, having heard this Dharma teaching, all abided in the ten bhumis, and each attained clairvoyance.
