What should we do if we are poor? If the god is not pleased, then that child will also face death. If we can please the god, but we are poor, where can we get people and livestock? Thinking about these things, they hurried home. They took all the valuable things in the house to sell, in order to buy livestock. Then, they went to a person and said, "Sir, please lend us some gold, if we can repay it in ten days, that would be great. If we can't repay it, we promise to be your slaves to repay." Having said that, they took the gold to buy a person. They bought the person, but that person did not know that he would be killed. Then, the ignorant parents did not go home, but went to the temple. They said to the sorcerer, "Now quickly perform the sacrifice." Then, the parents personally slaughtered the livestock and also killed that person. Then, that sorcerer thought about performing the sacrifice and lit the fire. Then, the god descended and said, "Your child has been taken away by me." Then, the parents were overjoyed and said, "If this child can live, we are willing to be slaves." After the parents made sacrifices to the god, they returned to their home and saw that the child was facing death. Then, the parents were in pain and frustrated, their hearts filled with the sting of sorrow, feeling desperate, and at that moment faced death. O Medicine Master, do not associate with unwholesome friends. Questioner: World Honored One, where will those beings be reborn? The World Honored One replied: Medicine Master, be quiet, do not ask me. Questioner: World Honored One, please tell us! Sugata, please tell us! The World Honored One replied: Medicine Master, that mother was reborn in the great Howling Hell. The father was reborn in the great Crushing Hell. The son was reborn in the great Hot Hell. The sorcerer was reborn in the great Avici Hell. Questioner: World Honored One, where was that innocent person reborn? What is his future destiny?

That innocent person was born among the gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens. I asked: World-Honored One, what cause and condition led that person to be born with the same status as the gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens? The World-Honored One replied: O physicians, listen. At the time of death, that person, with a mind of faith in the Thus-Gone One, prostrated to the Buddha and said once, "I prostrate to the Buddha." O physicians, that root of virtue will cause him to experience the happiness of the gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens for sixty kalpas. For eighty kalpas, he will be born remembering his past lives. In birth after birth, he will be free from all the pain of sorrow. As soon as he is born, he will avert all suffering. However, it is not possible to completely liberate all sentient beings from sorrow. I asked: World-Honored One, how can all sentient beings be effectively liberated from sorrow? The World-Honored One replied: O physicians, exertion should be practiced. I asked: World-Honored One, what is the practice of exertion? The World-Honored One replied: O physicians, listen. What is called exertion is the showing of fruits. For example, the fruit of stream-entry is called the place of exertion. The fruit of once-returning is called the place of exertion. The fruit of non-returning is called the place of exertion. The fruit of an Arhat, and the cessation of the fruit of an Arhat, are called the place of exertion. The fruit of a Pratyekabuddha, and the knowledge of the fruit of a Pratyekabuddha, are called the place of exertion. The fruit of a Bodhisattva, and the place of Bodhi, are called the place of exertion. O physicians, these are called the places of exertion. I asked: World-Honored One, how should the stream-enterer and the fruit of stream-entry be shown? The World-Honored One replied: For example, if someone plants a tree, on that very day the roots of that tree take hold, and on that very day the roots go down to a yojana below. Another person also plants a tree in the same way, and on that very day,

Because the wind blew, that tree did not take root. Then, that person pulled the tree out from that place. Another person also argued, 'Why did you dig my land?' At that time, the king heard the news of the two people arguing. That king sent a messenger, saying, 'Go and bring those two people here!' That person ran like a god in haste and said to the two people, 'The king is summoning you.' After that, one person felt fear and dread. The other person, without fear or dread, was taken to where the king was. After being brought, they sat before the king. Then, the king said these words to the two people, 'Why are you arguing?' Then, the two people stood up and said these words to the king, 'Great king, please listen. We do not have even a little land, but we planted a tree on rented land, but the wind blows it, and it does not take root, nor does it grow leaves, flowers, and fruits. Great king, its roots are even a hundred krosa below.' This person accuses me of making a mistake, but I have not made a mistake, may the gods know that I have not made any mistake. Then, that king summoned thirty million ministers, gathered them together, and commanded, 'Speak!' The ministers replied, 'What should we say?' 'On what day is a tree planted, and on the same day does it take root, grow leaves, flowers, and fruits, where have you seen or heard of it? You should distinguish this matter in seven days or half a month.' Then, those ministers stood up from their seats and said to the king, 'Great king, we cannot distinguish this matter. It is useless to distinguish this matter. Great king, this is strange, let us first question this person.' 'Hey, is what you said true? Speak!' That person said, 'Great king, that matter is false.' The king said, 'On what day is a tree planted, on that day it takes root,'
