Ti's son, the basis of letters, the basis of cognition, and the term used as the basis of expression is called a word. Whether it is knowable, recognizable, or fully knowable, whatever it may be, expression, definite expression, imputation, complete establishment, following, detailed examination, comprehensive examination, individual close examination, seeking, completely seeking the Dharma, any Dharma, and the Dharmas that exist in what, symbols, comprehensive consideration, close consideration, the mind's clear expression, doubt, hesitation, regret, entering, and any other definite considerations of the Dharma, Sharadvati's son, that is a word. Sharadvati's son, what is the meaning? It is understanding the meaning of that word, that is the meaning. Sharadvati's son, the unspeakable is the meaning. Sharadvati's son, if this thing called meaning is grasped as children understand it, then it will become a word, not a meaning. Sharadvati's son, therefore, meaning is unspeakable. Sharadvati's son, I say, "I do not speak together with the world, but the world speaks together with me," this I said thinking metaphorically. Sharadvati's son, what the Tathagata said as wise, in reality the Tathagata said nothing. Therefore, the Tathagata is like this, skilled in aggregates, skilled in realms, skilled in sources. Because there is no skill for him, therefore it is said that the Tathagata is so skilled. For example, the Tathagata is the one who teaches the detailed distinction of Dharma. Sharadvati's son, what is Dharma? What is the detailed distinction of Dharma? Sharadvati's son, the eye is called Dharma, likewise, the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are called Dharma. Sharadvati's son, how is the eye Dharma? Sharadvati's son, the eye that has arisen in the past, future, and present is called Dharma, because it is emptiness, therefore it is invisible. Why is that? Because its nature is such.

Therefore. Just as the eye is, so too are the natures of the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind empty. What is the thorough discernment of the eye? It is the complete seeking of the eye. How is the eye completely sought? The eye is not seen in the eye. Why is that? If there were an eye in the eye, there would be two eyes, and there would also be a person inside. Thus, the designation of the eye is designation, dharma, and eye. Among these, the Bodhisattva who sees properly and is protected discerns separately in this way: "What among the eye, the designation of the eye, and the dharma can become the basis of reality?" When they discern each of them separately in this way, all of them are sound, and there is no basis for a real foundation in this. Why is that? In this way, the consciousness of sound and the expression of sound are worldly. What is worldly? It is not transcendental. What is not transcendental? It is the state of the naked ascetics. That is the word of the naked ascetics. What is the word of the naked ascetics? It is not the teaching of the Buddha, for the Thus gone One speaks of the transcendental. What is not transcendental is not what he speaks. Although the Thus Gone One is accomplished through speech, the Thus Gone One teaches the Dharma to cut off speech, but does not make a complete collection of words, so it is thought. Again, they discern separately in this way: "By what virtue is the eye manifestly accomplished?" They think to themselves, "It is accomplished by that virtue." Why is that? Because it is a limb of existence. Why is it called a limb of existence? It is a limb of existence, and because of that cause, it is called a limb of existence. Sharadvatiputra, how is it called existence? Because of going, existence arises, and that is what has become the eye here. Among these, because of manifest joy, there is a result in manifest joy. For example, the eye is me, the eye is mine, and so the result of the pride of the eye arises by going, so that is existence. Relying on that,

Thus, they grasp separately. What is grasped completely? All suffering is grasped completely. What is all suffering? It is like this: grasping at "I" and grasping at "mine." These two are limbs here; therefore, they are called limbs of existence. Sharadvatiputra, it is like this: for example, when sound arises from a large drum, Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? From where does that sound arise, from the outside or the inside? He replied: Blessed One, that sound arises from the assembly. Sharadvatiputra, do you know all assemblies? He replied: Blessed One, I know, all are produced. The Blessed One said: Sharadvatiputra, existence is like that. Sharadvatiputra, likewise, the eye is empty of the eye. There is no eye in the eye. To that, children are attached to unreal objects. Likewise, the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are empty. Sharadvatiputra, just so, the eye is well sought. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke these verses: The eye is said to be emptiness. That eye does not exist. If the eye does not exist, Whose is impermanence? The ear is said to be impermanent. That is not an object. If the ear does not exist, Whose is impermanence? The nose is said to be impermanent. That is not an object. If that is not an object, Who speaks of impermanence? The tongue is said to be impermanent. That tongue does not exist. If that is not an object, Whose is impermanence? The body is said to be impermanent. That is not an object. If the body does not exist, Whose is impermanence? The mind is said to be impermanent. That is not an object. If that is not an object, Whose is impermanence? The twelve sources are spoken of, They also have as many names. If the sources do not exist, Whose are so many names? The great elements are also four, What do they rely on? Like throwing mud at a dog, They are chased by names. Those who are not chased by names, Do not boast of themselves, The mind
